Maygay Fruit machine with 220 electrics
« on: February 21, 2015, 10:18:24 AM »
Hi all,
Yellow Freight showed up at my house with a machine that a friend sent me from England.  It included a kit to convert money from 20p to American quarters or quarter tokens.  That looks pretty straight forward but....... it is 220v.  Anybody know if I have to change current internally or is there some kind of converter or something I can plug into, like a step down converter or ??????
Thanks, Denny

Check on the power supply sticker, it may be variable voltage.
ie.Input 120-240volts, 50hz-60hz cycles.

There are power converters available that will do what you want but that may be the longer way around the problem. You plug the converter into your 115vac outlet and then plug the slot machine into the converter's 220v outlet. If you get one be sure to get a converter with enough output power to operate the slot machine, could be 400 watts or more, you'd have to find out the slot machine's specs. If the slot machine has a main or primary fuse you can get an idea of max power used, multiply the fuse amperage times the voltage to get power (watts). For example, 3 amp main fuse and 220 volt ac indicates about 660 watts of power needed. This method of determining power used will be higher than actual since the fuse value is selected by the mfr to be somewhat above the normal max current usage by 30% or so to allow for surges or other variations such as line voltage sag.

Before going that route take a close look at the main power supply, see if it doesn't have an option for different input voltages. There may be a jumper or a switch or some way to make a different connection, check the large input power transformer also. Sometimes you have to unsolder some wiring on the main power transformer and re-configure it. If you can get the machine's installation & operators manual it will hopefully have the info you need. Or maybe someone here has done this already on a similar machine.

Who is the slot manufacturer and are they still around? They may have produced versions of this machine for export to countries that use 115 vac. If so there should be a way to do what you need to do.

Also, the friend you got it from might have the info, have you checked with him?

Thanks guys,
I will check the power supply tomorrow.  The manufacturer is Maygay, who I am pretty sure is out of business and I believe was bought by Barcrest ?  The machine is from the TV show "Eastenders" and was actually sent to me from some of the cast (who I am sure have absolutely no idea about the machine).  They simply contacted the company and had it shipped.  I will let you know what I find in the power supply.
Thanks, Denny

Here's an example of one company that produces voltage converters, there are quite a few of them out there:

http://www.voltageconverters.com/voltage_converters.html

Many of these converters only change the voltage, the frequency stays the same. Not sure if running your British slot machine on 60 Hertz would be ok or not. Although nowadays a lot of electronic equipment is made to work with 50-60 Hz line voltage without a problem.

This may not be the correct Maygay manual but it may be of some help until you locate the right one. It seems that they used the same cabinet design for several different game themes so hopefully this manual will cover a lot of the things on your machine. On page 2 it mentions that the power supply unit (PSU) does have an input voltage selector switch and page 10 says it can be set for either 115 or 230 vac. Maybe they did this on all of their machines.

Hi,
WOW, manual was great.  It appears it is for a different model, BUT... the power supply did indeed have a voltage switch.  You can use the switch for 110 or 220.  So I put it on 110 and put the new coin acceptor in and I had to change the funky plug that was on the power cord.  Plugged it in and am now playing a British "Fruit Machine"  It is unique, land on certain squares and stars from the TV show talk to you.  Interesting!!  It takes US quarters well, but the Jap tokens only about every other one.  Don't know if it's the size or the weight, but quarters work well so I'll get a few rolls and have some fun.   Thanks for all the help, you guys are GREAT !   :thank_you:   :thank_you:

Yeah Steve, probably cost as much to ship as the machine did.  Came into Philadelphia Port Authority and the Yellow Freight to my house.  Must have cost plenty !
