I used to train harness race horses a few years back. What I found is whatever was used in the Olympics made it's way to horse racing as long as it worked on horses too.

One Sports Illustrated Article I remember said; To be a top athlete you need three things: a good trainer, a good pharmacist, and a good lawyer!

When Armstrong won the tour-D-France several times in a row I knew he was doping. Pretty sad anyone with enough knowledge can beat the testing.

One trick that was used in horse racing in the 1980's was to pour a pound of baking soda in a quart jar full of water, add confectionery sugar. The horse wouldn't drink that so the trainer would insert plastic tubing in the horses nose and down to the stomach. Then they poured the concoction down the horses throat threw the tube. It was called "Milkshaking". This would give the horse a "carbohydtrate high" from the sugar and the baking soda would add carbon dioxide to the blood stream that would buffer lactic acid buildup. When it worked a horse never got tired.
Side affects like killing all the intestine bacteria often happened. Horses would dehydrate, get sick, etc. Didn't matter they still did it to win.
One guy in Swartz Creek Mi killed his horse because the tube went to the lungs, not the stomach. He drowned the horse.

I'm glad I got out! There are a lot of decent people training horses but there are a lot who will do anything to win, and when they get away with it over and over again the decent people quit.
