Reel tapes flapping
« on: March 29, 2024, 09:27:22 AM »
What's the best thing to secure reel tapes down? I've tried a few different double-sided tapes, but nothing seems to work.

I never use double-sided tape...in fact, I remove the adhesive that some else put on them.
Because reelstrips are normally stored rolled up, they should naturally "snap" into place into the edges of the reel basket slots and hold in position with the notches.
BTW You can feel the raised notches on the outside of the reelbasket rims, where the basket spokes are closest together.

Measure your reel strips.
They should be 3-5/16" wide by 27-7/8" long.
If narrower, they may be S2000 reelstrips, rather than S+ reelstrips.
Or they were S+ reelstrips cut to fit narrower S2000 reel baskets, now are too narrow and no longer fit S+ reel baskets.

What are the numbers of these strips on the bottom?
Also, check inside the slots inside the edges of the reel baskets for debris with the tip of a small flat screwdriver.
The reelstrip edges should be allowed to fully fit inside the edges without any effort.

Thanks, I'll have to pull them out and measure them, clean up the reels and strips. I did try peeling some of the tape off while it is on the reel, but the covering on the strip started to peel with it. When I had to check the numbers on some other of my machines in the past, they we like glued on the ends. They we pretty crusty to get apart. I guess with the double-sided tape on there they are too thick then to fit into the reel edges. They are usually buckled like the left and right reel in the pictures.

I use this and it has worked well for me.  It say permanent, but you can break it free again if you need to.  Just be careful doing it so you don't wrinkle the strip in the process.  I've had some strips (primarily bally alpha) that have come loose at sometime in their history and slapped the reel basket or window and messed the strips up.  But even if they stay in place the gap like yours have looks like shit if you ask me.

Yea Tilt, I don’t like the look of them and the flapping and slapping the opening. Will Goof Off damage the strips? I think this is my Sunday project to pull and clean them.

I use the same tape as tilt mentioned and it works excellent. I cut it a little shorter than the strip. I use goo gone, goof off should be the same. Be careful not to wrinkle the strip when cleaning.

Goof off may, I haven't tried it.   I use Goo Gone to get rid of the previous tape residue and that's never damaged a laminated reel strip.  Then cut a piece of tape the width of the strip, and then in half horizontally.  That fits like the original adhesive and holds up well.
