I used to get priceline and hot wire deals on cars in Vegas for 9.99/day. Assuming I was in vegas for 4 nights. it was cheaper to rent a car and park it for the duration of my stay vs 2 people taking a shuttle or a taxi and it gave me the flexibility to get to the shopping plazas convieniently. I also rarely used self parking especially downtown where they charged- so I am wondering if charging for Valet Parking is part of this scheme. It seems these articles are long on sensation and short on details. If I am heading downtown I would pull into the Nugget Valet and if they were full, they would always ask if I was a guest, I would pull out a $20 and they then say "of course you are". The same goes at Ceasars. Valet Full - 7diamond only..... $20 always got me VIP parking. Ya sure I am paying more than the $10 proposed fee, but its my option to do so. If I can afford to sit down and play blackjack at $25/hand. I can give $20 to a young valet.
I certainly have no issues with tiping or buying good service but I do have a major issue with the hotels nickle and diming me to the point where I feel goured. Most rooms don't have coffee makers, and their business offices charge me to use a computer to print my air ticket (it will be nice when I can get all my air tickets on my phone), My point is that I already pay them enough with their mandatory resort fees. To me this is like an airline offering a $100 fare but after you hit the buy-it-now they stick you with $300 in fuel or other stupid surcharges.
What Vegas fails to realize is that I can gamble in any Canadian Province and practically any US State. I go to vegas for the spectacle. Sure I miss the old hotels that had charm, but I applaud vegas for constantly reinventing itself. If they want me back on a regular basis they need to make it attractive. I used to love the air and hotel deals I got, cheap food (long gone are the $4.99 steak and eggs) but they always made it back at the tables.
The parking fees will mean less people will want cars, which will harm shopping, and non-strip businessses. If I was the chamber of commerce I would be poo-poo-ing this big time.
