88-3 code on my S6000 Fireball frenzy
« on: December 14, 2020, 09:37:03 PM »
Machine runs fine, but after about 20 pulls I get a 88-3 code. I run a hard reset and it runs for another 10-20 pulls then stops and gives the code again. I have even swapped the chips and reset and still get the same results. also the batteries are good in it if that makes a difference. any ideas?

Could your battery voltage is low, just on the edge of the work/fail point of the battery monitoring circuit on the MPU board.
See page 2 of the attached PDF for error codes.

I checked the batteries and they are good. I did a reset and it ran again for another 15-20 pulls and stopped. This time is got a 88-2 code. So by the way of the chart. 88 is a catastrophic failure, but what is the -3 or -2 code?

Can you post a picture of your battery setup (resize as necessary to get filesize under 1MB)?  Stock Bally S6000 MPUs have a 3.6V AA size lithium battery.  Sounds like yours was converted to 2 1.5V AA's?  If so, that's likely your problem.  If you want to use AA's vs the 3.6V lithium you need to use 3 AA's (4.5V total).

Yes that is what mine has, the two double A's. So it won't hurt anything bumping it up to 4.5v?

A soldered in 3.6V LiIon battery is what the board was designed for but if you insist on using AA batteries you should use 3, those wire leads to the battery holder make nice antennas to pick up external electrical noise and compromise the boards ability to operate properly though.

No, it won't hurt it.  With 2AA's you're starting .6V lower than a new 3.6V lithium (yeah, they read a bit higher when new).  Try that and see if it helps.  I'd suggest one other thing too if you're going to go that route.  Get long enough leads that you can get the batteries off the MPU boards.  AA alkalines can leak too if you don't keep an eye on them and damage your MPU board.  I used 3M scotch lock (similar to velcro, but stronger) and stuck it to the front of the MPU when I had my S6000s.  That way every time you open the door you see them and their condition.

the two double A's were installed when I bought it. So if I were to do it right, where is a good place to order a battery holder from? But if I go with the 3 battery holder and mount it off the board, I suppose twisting the wires will help in ant interference.

Well if you have a Fry's electronics or a Radio Shack that is still open by you that would be the quickest way.  Otherwise pretty much any electronic parts house will have them (mouser, digikey, Jameco, etc), but then ya have to pay shipping too which will no doubt be much more than the holder itself.  Yeah, theoretically twisting the wires would help prevent EMI (or cancel it out) like twisted pair UTP Cat 5/6 cable.  I didn't and  never had any issues with it YMMV.  I put mine right on the front of the MPU tray running the wires through a keylock hole and held in place with 3M Scotch Dual Lock.

Well I installed a three double A battery holder and mounted on the front of the board like how Tilt said. I ran a reset, and about five pulls latter 88-3 code again. Reset again and about 20 pulls latter got it again.

Well that's a bummer, but at least you know it's not the battery voltage causing it.  Hang on for other suggestions, but I'd probably start looking for a new MPU board.

Check with some of the vendors on the home page here.

I'd also pull and reseat all your removable IC's on the board.  Sometimes they aren't fully seated or have some oxidation built up on them causing a poor connection.  Won't hurt anything, just be careful not to bend any pins and use electrostatic discharge precautions too.

There is a jumper on the board for the battery. It is used to disconnect the battery for shelf storage. It  may have a loose or oxidized connection. Try removing and installing the jumper to get a good  connection or just solder the  pins together.  I  have seen  many boards from the casino which had jumper pins soldered together just for eliminating errors. I  will find out which jumper it is. JW  ?

JW20 is the battery jumper. May have a poor internal connection. Reseat jumper or solder pins together
