Williams 400 high speed mystery HElP
« on: October 08, 2014, 01:44:54 PM »
I have a Williams 400 high speed it had been setting for a couple years, when I turned machine on it says game change , I know the game has not been changed.
Got a correct denomination chip, I did the correct clear, when powered up I have 3 bongs and the it says game  change, I push diagnostic button it should change to clear, stays on game change.

I looked at the board the 2 chips below where clear chip has been installed I noticed that the labels on the chips had peeled up, I have a suspicion that the chips has possibly been erased,  anybody got any ideas ?
Any ideas where I can get the game chips . If that is the problem
Thanks for any replies, I'm stuck

I forgot to mention the battery was low and I replaced it before I tried to do a clear.

I worked in a shop for years where we had programmed test eproms that had the labels removed, you could see thru clear glass window (the eproms had the id stamped on the chip itself). They never lost their data. We used these eproms on a regular basis and didn't have a problem. Of course, any equipment that left the shop going back to the customer had labels over the eprom window so it could be identified as to what data was inside and to cover the window as a precaution. But if you read the datasheet on the chip you'll see that it takes a pretty good blast of UV to erase. One of our techs did a test by sitting a group of programmed eproms on the window sill in direct sunlight for weeks, they had the eprom window uncovered, none of them lost their data.

So it takes fairly intense UV from an eraser for about 20-25 minutes to erase, ordinary light won't do it. Even though ordinary light contains UV rays it just isn't strong enough, especially inside the machine inside your home or the casino. So I wouldn't think your eproms have lost their data due to the label peeling up or off. My experience with this is back in the day with the 27XXX series of eproms, we worked with the 2708 up to the 27512 from Intel, AMD and others often, these are similar to the ones used on the older WMS dotmation machines. Modern eproms might be more sensitive but I don't think that would apply in this case.

But with all that said you can certainly replace the game software to see if that will fix your machine. I think some of the vendors here on NLG (see homepage) can get the software to you. Or you can try sending a private message to some of the NLG members to see if they can help with that. I've also seen eprom software for older slots for sale at various slot machine repair places. So it can be found. I'm thinking the error code you are seeing is perhaps caused by the process of changing the game software. As you mentioned, after a game software change on the WMS 400 series machines you have to clear the ram with a special clear chip specifically for the denomination the new game software uses. So there are WMS clear chips in several different denominations. Are you sure the clear chip used was the same denomination as the game software?

The clear chip was the correct denomination, I was able to get it cleared OK but when I play the game I have a 2 of the reel symbols will not payout or I guess I should say add  credits. also no sound on these 2 reel symbols, it appears to be just the 3rd reel.  I have sent the sound chips to a dealer to check them out, I will find out next week,  I beleave these sound chips where partly erased and that is the problem, I should find out sometime next week.  I will post the results.

The progress you made is good. How did you get past the original problem of getting 3 bongs and the game would stick on the error "game change" and you weren't able to get it to play?

On the sound and payout problem, i
s it possible the reel strips are installed on the wrong reels, that strip #3 is on reel #1 for example, or if the three entire reel assemblies was removed maybe they were reinstalled in the wrong position? The game software could be playing correctly but the symbols on the 3 reels display is not correct? Some strips have a position indicator or writing that shows which reel position (#1-#3) they should be installed.

The dead battery might have let the ram get corrupted or changed and that is what caused the "game change" error in the first place. After the ram clear then it was restored and that problem was fixed. Will be good to hear what you find out about the sound problem.

I will post when I get sound problem solved.

I have no experience in clearing a Williams machine, I have done a lot of clears with Bally 5500 and 6000 so

When I tried to clear the machine,  I thought it would quick clear, like a Bally.  I found out that was not the case, I didn't have enough patience.   The machine cleared ok when I took my time.   If there is any way to do something wrong, I will do it !

Learning can take a while.

Don't worry at all about that, everyone here has made a mistake along the way, it is one of the ways to learn. Does the place you sent the sound eproms for testing have replacement parts if they are bad?
Also, if you get a chance can you post a picture of your machine, I've never played that one?  Thanks!

Thanks - that's pretty cool artwork on the machine. Are the sounds related to sounds a car makes when racing around, like engine revving, honking horn, tires squealing, etc?

Yes, enjoyable game. Red car on the payline starts the bonus which is a police car chase through free spins. Sound effects throughout the spin cycle.
