1rst thin you can do with the machine off is check all the connections going to the display. Did this problem just happen? Anything you can explain leading up to this would be a big help for future diagnosis.

They are out there, but may be pricey unless you get lucky and somebody is just dumping the parts.

I think I may possibly have a PS for the dot display. Will let you know tomorrow. Maybe someone else will chime in as well.

If there is no concern about preserving the machine with original status parts any inexpensive 12vdc power supply capable of a few amps such as an ordinary pc computer power supply can be wired in place of the dot matrix power supply board. That can also be done as a temporary way to troubleshoot and prove if it is the power supply causing the problem. The dot matrix power supply board only makes 12vc and it is only used by the dot matrix screen and the dotmation controller board. So it is fairly easy to substitute another 12vdc power supply in its place.

On the power supply board disconnect the green & white 115vac power cable and the red & black 12vdc output cable. Then connect 2 wires from another 12vdc power supply to the disconnected red & black power cable. If that fixes it the dotmation box power supply is bad.

I personally think display, but I was posting in reference to Rick stating to check PS for bulging caps. The only saving grace is that pinballs used those same displays, so it may be another avenue for parts.

These dot plasma displays are energy hogs.  So if you are going to connect a 12v power supply to it, make sure it has at least 4 amps.  If you have a weak power supply, you get sync issues like the one on the picture.  It could also be the display, but it is not that difficult to rule out the power supply.

If connecting a temporary 12vdc power supply fixes the problem then the original dotmation box power supply board is bad. You can search for a replacement board, or do like many do and just install another 12vdc power supply in the top cabinet (such as a pc computer power supply) behind the dot matrix metal box. Then run in 2 wires carrying the 12vdc and connect them to the 12vdc power cable that you unplug from the old power supply board. The new power supply can be plugged into the lower power supply down below into one of the extra 115vac outlets.

I agree it is probably the dot matrix display that is flaking out. But they are hard to find and expensive to try as the first thing. Much easier to jumper in 12vdc to prove if the dot power supply board is good or bad.

I'd also double check the ribbon cable going from the dot controller board to the back of the dot matrix screen, make sure the ribbon itself is not partially coming out of the ribbon connector (header) on both ends. Sometimes people pull on the ribbon to remove a cable and that can make them intermittent.

In case the OP hasn't seen the insides of the dotmation box here it is with some notes:

If they meant the machine was not repairable they are wrong. If they meant the individual dot matrix screen itself is not repairable then that is likely correct. Replacement dot matrix screens can sometimes be found, typically off of machines getting parted out, but they can be costly.

There are three parts to the entire dotmation display assembly in the top of the machine- the dot matrix screen, the dotmation controller board and the dotmation 12vdc power supply board. You will need to substitute parts into your machine to find out what is wrong, or send your parts to someone to try in a good machine to prove what is bad. If you have a meter you can measure the 12vdc power out of the power supply board to see if it is spazzing but the meter may not show a problem if it has a ton of ripple on it. Better to jumper in a good 12vdc supply to find out. If you do this be sure to disconnect the orig power supply board. And be careful, that orig power supply board has a 115vac cable connected to power it.

I think there were several pinball models that used this type of gas display technology, but some of them are different physical size, like smaller. The one in your machine is a 192x64 dot matrix display. But I wouldn't rush out and replace the display first thing. Since it works ok sometimes it is possible that something else is the problem and those other things are much lower cost. I'd try another power supply, make sure the ribbon cable on the back of the screen is good and even try another dotmation controller board. Make sure all of the cable connections in the dot matrix box are tight and don't have any corrosion or tarnished connections. Press down or remove & reinstall the socketed chips on the dot controller card. Sometimes over the years the ic leads and the socket contacts can get tarnished and not make good contact. And if someone has a similar model machine maybe you can check your parts in their machine.

Seems like Data East or Sega was one of the pinball companies that also used this display, maybe someone else knows for sure. Problem is they are still scarce, I've seen them priced over $300 but that was from a parts business. Individuals selling used parts may be lower cost but of course you probably won't get much, if any, warranty on a used part.

Hi, I just picked up 8 WMS dotmation games and will most likely be parting out a couple.
I need to see what parts I need off them first then I'll let all the guys on here know what I have left for sale.
I'll keep you posted on a DOT display.

Thanks.
Bud
