Bally Alpha -> Alpha 2 Conversion (iDeck Size Does Matter)
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:45:01 PM »
I'm about the put the cherry on top of my alpha2 conversion and would like some advice from those who have done this before.   The iDeck (that I have) measures 20 1/8 inches long.   The length of a standard button panel is 19 3/8 which leaves the deck 1/2" larger than the button panel.

What is the best way to fix this?  cut the deck? cut the door?

I'm looking for the best result here.  If I cut the door foam I think it will look unfinished and sloppy.   I need a pro solution to this.

You have to modify the old metal button deck to use the i-deck.  I sugguest study and look at and don't f**k up your touch screen cables on the edge.  It is work and tedious. (the method). Have a Nice dremel tool etc. on hand.

Yes but my ideck extends beyond the metal deck and on to the door.

that's the issue - and it's by a huge margin  - 1/2 inch over

Yep, You have to figure it out.  Look at the black pad right to left etc.  If you want blueprints on how to do this mayby someone else can chime in.  I just Do it. It's not that hard -just some work.  I will post a pic of what one of mine looks like installed, same sheet you have in a few.

Thank you - You're awesome

That's exactly what I'm looking for.

the cutting and making it work is easy   Making it casino worthy and not a hack job is not so easy.

In your photo the deck doesn't sit on top of the door bumper.   Most photos of conversions I've seen have deck just placed on top of the black bumper.   For me it is unacceptable.  For others if they don't mind so be it.

I have OCD

Bumpers un-bolt and you can "tuck" after you do the metal work to the OLD metal button deck.  I did some of these munch and they do look very nice for a conversion.  Just a little work and being carefull with the equipment while atriculating.

I for one did not bother to drill out the old player panel frame.  I just removed the whole player panel frame.  Cut off the middle braces in the hole left behind and just inserted the iDeck there.  It doesn't look casino worthy, but for my use, it is good enough.

Looks good guys! I can't wait to do a conversion. Just need the funds. Maybe by the time I do mine, I'll find the old V32 conversion button panel?

A few things I've learned:

1. separate your ideck touch screen
From monitor. This allows cleaning
Of smoke and human discust.

2.  90% of the chrome gets cut a way to fit for
The ideck.

3.  Once the deck is fitted.  A nice seal
Is needed to keep light from bleed through.
You can see in this photograph that there
Are two spaces on the left and right Bottom where light
Can bleed through this is unacceptable

I did mine diff. No Bleed thru on light and I used a new deck so did not have to seperate.  If Anyone does seperate these (touch from panel lcd) Be very carefull as the touch connections are fragile and small- :cool_thumb_up: .

Here are pictures of the door assembly and the three ribbon cables that need to be disconnected. Care needs to be taken but it is very easy and necessary to clean and install the deck properly.

Once those three ribbon cables are out the top screen pops off the door the bottom VGA monitor can safely be removed.

Then the reverse can be done when placing back in the alpha-1 cabinet

That is a Alpha 2 door frame.  The wacking is for alpha 1.  The I-deck oval's out there are alpha 2 mostly unless you found a early conversion Bally did. Which do exist (square type to fit alpha 1 cab.).

Munch, I will.  I will look at my last one here and try to share but the first one I did was a test.  The ones after I learned more.  As far as the light you need to remove and place thin sticky foam under it.  I just used igt rolls of it but it is generic stuff.  Once these are installed it is kinda a pain to remove on a a-1 to a-2 conversion--I know-- :cool_thumb_up: .

Awesome thanks - that is
What this thread was all about

I have a bunch of oval a2 decks that
I want in my old ailing a1 machines.

For me the trick is to make an oval
Deck look as perfect as a rectangle
One.

I'm in the process now looking for the iDeck. I may be able to get my hands on an order one that I believe fits an S9 or V32 Alpha 1 machine. I was told that it has the "old" touchscreen in it. I have two questions about this; 1) what does the old one look like (does it look like the new ones out there and is the screen quality as good as a new one) and 2) will the Alpha 1 iDeck work with the Alpha 2 conversion?

Any help would well, help...a lot :)

Thanks!

All iDecks are for alpha2 systems.  Bally did some V32's with alpha2 parts that included a "square" iDeck that fits perfectly into an alpha1 cabinet.  As far as the touchscreen types, there are 2 that I know of.

1.  The older iDecks has a bigger separation between the touchscreen and the actual lcd.  They also have the vga a/d board and the touchscreen controller on a separate module that attaches to the iDeck via cables.  Then the USB and VGA cables come out of that module and plug into the mpu.  The single mechanical button connects straight into the backplane from the button on the iDeck.
2.  The newer iDecks are a single piece of hardware, with everything integrated on the iDeck itself.  The spacing between the touhscreen and the lcd is a lot closer. You then have the 3 harnesses coming out of that (USB, VGA, and mechanical button).

The newer one is more desirable as it is easier to deal with.  I have both types and find the newer type much better to work with.  I don't know if the V32 square ones are the older type of iDeck or not.
