Bally Alpha 1 CPU, V32 cabinet - what video card do I need?
« on: September 06, 2015, 07:15:16 AM »
i finally got a CPU for my V32 cabinet.  It's an Alpha 1 cpu that came with bios and jurisdiction chip.  I purchased separately the needed OS and Clear cards as well as the game card for roulette.  I performed a successful clear but when I tried to boot the machine with the OS and game card I get some errors the last of which says the required nvidia card is not found.  Assuming that's all I need, does anyone know if there are certain off the shelf nvidia cards that I can get that till work in this application?  I've done some research and I think the standard card may have been a Jaton video-228PCI-twin but I'm wondering if there are other nvidia PCI cards that would work.  Do they have to be dual for example since the v32 only has one screen?  I've seen some nvidia 5200 PCI based single head cards pretty cheap.  I'll attach the error message.  Thanks!

The Jaton video-228PCI-twin definitely works.   Don't know about anything else.

Some more digging and it appears that I have a 512 alpha CPU (part # 200173). I probably wouldn't have gotten this mpu if I'd realized that.  I would have instead looked for a 1gig or 2gig mpu.  It looks like I still have the slot for a PCI twin head video card and even have the brackets on the front for the dual vga connectors.  Can I still use thus CPU/mpu to run roulette in a V32 cab if I get the right video card, or is it impossible?

Won't work.  You need a 1-gig with dual vied. card.  Also A 1-gig becomes a 2-gig by simply adding another 1-gig stick to it 1+1=2  Make sure you get one with the bios and juristiction.  You are going to want to run a 336 os and will need a 335 clear card also.

Is there a processor difference between the 512 and 1gig CPU or just memory?  I do see that the 512 lacks the desktop memory upgrade slot but was just curious about processor differences.

Yes, the 1GB ones have a 1Ghz processor, the 512 and 256 usually have a 400Mhz processor.  You should get a 1GB box with the expandable ram as there are two versions (one of them cannot be upgraded).

Thanks to everyone's advice, guidance and opman's great deal on a 1gig CPU I now have a fully working v32 running roulette!  I got it all working last night and even though the bill validation was all beat to hell and even broken in places, I was able to get it seated and working.  I don't have any tito's so I haven't tested the printer yet but I was able to feed it some 20's and 100's, accumulate some credits and play some roulette!

I still have a lot to learn since I'm still figuring a lot of this out but this site is AMAZINGLY helpful.  Unlike computers there isn't as much of this info floating around as abundantly for slot machines.

Down the road I'm sure I'd like to do some things like maybe get a better Tito system, get some more games, maybe find a roulette header, figure out how to changes the color on the side lights and eventually get my second cabinet running.

You will find the V32 platform to be a very nice setup.  If you are lucky enough to find the parts, you can convert your V32 to an i-Reels machine which are very fun to play.

I do understand the need for contributing members.  I did contribute for a month or two when I first signed up and I will shortly do the same again.  I don't think I can leave it on as recurring indefenitly but I will give something back.

Yeah, those I-reels look sweet.  For the longest time I didn't even realize there were actuall reels behind the glass in those games.  I thought all V32's were the same solid touch screen.  I've only recently learned about the I-reels and that some of the cash spin games I know and love are indeed that.  I believe there is an all video version of the cash spin/U-spin games isn't there?  Those I-deck conversions look pretty sweet to but for now hopefully I can entertain myself for a while with the standard alpha 1 v32 titles.  I can't afforded to go too crazy yet with upgrades.  Plus I have two Arcade projects to complete!

Yes, there is a V32 Reel version of cash spin, called Cash Spin Scatter.
