Wonder it someone did it because the triac on the main board that drives that light was defective?

Again, on a typical upright IGT S+ machine, nothing drives the light in the change/service button on the player panel -- there isn't any wiring that goes to it.

My guess is the casino didn't want the light on that button coming on, it would catch the player's eye and they might press it by mistake, causing a casino person to come over when not needed, a lot of nuisance calls for help. IGT probably listened when the casinos said no light in that button. Odd that the IGT factory would install the pushbutton assembly with a bulb since it didn't have lamp wiring going to it. Thousands of needless bulbs, that cost something. But maybe all of the pushbutton bases come from their maker with the bulb already installed and IGT factory didn't want to take the time to remove the bulb. There were probably earlier IGT machines where the Change/Service light did have a working bulb.

just an opinion...

The other cut wires are labeled card reader, etc and are cut on both ends.

Yes, that card reader stuff would be for the player's slot card equipment, the player slides their card in and it is read, then the info is sent over the cable to the casino central computer.

I brightened your photos so I could see details better, maybe they will let others here give advice about your connecting a candle and how the Change button figures into it.

Just to double-check, I'm not seeing your mpu board in these photos, did you remove it while tracing out the wiring? I think it should be down near the hopper, either behind it on the rear wall or on the sidewall down there.

I removed the MPU board as I'm waiting for the battery to come in.

Just a guess, but it looks like someone hacked together the wires to make it so that the change/service light on the button deck would light up when pressed.  On a typical S+ upright machine, IGT for whatever reason never ran wires to the light bulb in that button, so if you press the change/service button on the button deck, the top light in the candle should light up, but the physical button would not.

Regardless, you do not need a working candle to get your machine up and running.  You can always add a candle in later, and more than likely you'll be fine unhooking the jury-rigged button light wiring and plugging in the candle into the top box connector as it was designed.

So I'm guessing that if I unhook the grey insulated wires from the connector and plug in the candle, the candle should work as intended but the change/service button will no longer light up. The change/service button should still work because there is another pair of wires hooked up to it but it should no longer have a light function.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I will keep you all updated when parts arrive and I replace them.

That's what it looks like. The candle isn't too important for a home user other than for appearance reasons and they are sometimes helpful with fault indications since they can flash in different ways when a problem occurs. Some people don't even have them on their machine. It is used as a signaling method in the casino, that the player needs help or the machine has a need for casino staff to look into, like the hopper needs more coins added, that there is a jackpot needing to be paid, etc.

As you say, the pushbuttons have 2 sets of wires, one set for the switch connection and another set for lighting the bulb (except in the case of the Change button, which doesn't normally have bulb wires).

You can get a candle with the right connector that will plug in to the candle cable in your machine top box and that should do it. And if you really want the Change button to illuminate you can always just splice the 2 bulb power wires going to it to wires going to other similar bulbs.

Hopefully when your parts arrive and you get them and the mpu reinstalled the machine will work like it should.

The battery has been replaced and the error code was cleared. I pressed the reset button, heard the ding, closed the door and turned the key. The displays cleared and the reels spun and reset. I have a flashing zero in the coins played window and a flashing ambulance sign on the bill validator. Also, hooked up the candle and it's flashing too. Any ideas?

Did you use a set chip for the bill acceptor?

No, I didn't. The bill acceptor was already in the machine. The guy I bought it from said the bill validator was working. I realize it may not have been though. I have another machine I just picked up for parts that has a DBV 12 in it. I don't know what software it has though. I'm guessing I'll need a chip for that too?

You need to reset it with a bill acceptor chip to enable it to work.

I would request a SET 90 chip and a Clear Chip.

The clear chip is only needed rarely but when you pay more for postage than you do for the chips I would order both at the same time.

You may also want to look at RICKS HELP FILES (right side of home page).

This link will take you there and there is a further link from within that has how to enable the DBV

Is the bulb behind the coin slot good?  That should show "insert coin"?

Yes the bulb is good. It lights up and so does the coin accepted light. Overall, I'm very happy with the machine. It's my first one and with the exception of the bill validator (could use an upgrade), it's pretty cool.
