Musty Smell From Fan
« on: May 25, 2019, 02:02:50 AM »
Hello all,
I'm a new forum member and also new to owning a Game King which I purchased a few days ago.  The machine works great, but have one problem. The exhaust fan on the side of the machine smells musty while it's running.  My question is what can I do to get rid of the smell.
Thanks.

I also have had this problem.  Usually from machines that are just pulled from a Casino.  I have sprayed the insides with a tobacco smell eliminator.  Helps a bit, but not the total cure.

I had one as well. I wiped down the surfaces I could get to easily (with an ammonia based cleaner) without touching PCB's or any delicate looking parts. Then I put a pan full of baking soda inside and changed it monthly. It really made a difference.

I have big success using an ozone generator (o3 generator).

I used trash bags and tape to seal up the machine with the ozone generator sticking in, and let that run several times.
That took care of most of the smell (it was a smell of a thousand ash trays)

I of course cleaned the machine and filters as well. In one of the side filters i found a carpet of smelly lint and dust.

This took care of most of the smell. I concealed the faint smell that was left with some air freshener.

Pondus, where are the filters located?  I can see a fan on the top left side that looks gross, but it's behind the monitor and I can figure how to get to it.

The monitor simply slides forward, and you can disconnect the cables once it's pulled out.  When pulled out, lift the front upwards, it will release from it's tracks.

I have a savp reel machine.
The filter I am talking about was at the left hand side at the bottom.
I had to remove the brain box to get to it.

But in general, just look at your cabinet. All the places you can see a mesh of some kind is either a speaker or air in or out. Check them all to be sure ;)

So after a cleaning inside and out and removing the monitor I was able to get rid of a good portion of the smell.  Using ozium spray really was a big help.
The one thing I was afraid to clean or touch was the back of the CRT monitor.  All the electronics on the back of the monitor were yellow from the tobacco.
Is it safe to clean the back of the monitor.
Thanks.

Open the top of a small box of Arm & Hammer baking soda and place it in the back right corner of the floor of the cabinet.

In one week, you'll be able to eat out of your machine! lol

I wash CRT monitors.  I spray the entire thing down with Simple Green...the tube, chassis (PCB), and then use a soft paint brush to scrub it all down.  Once it’s all rinsed I let it dry in the hot sun for 2-3 days.  Main thing is to ensure that everything is totally dry before putting it back in the machine and applying power.

Correct you are about the high voltage.  Been doing this for years.  Common practice in the arcade machine collector community.  As long as the tube is discharged and you’re careful, no problem.
