DF:

In many cases, slot machines that have been sent out to stud for home use have the coin lock out coil (I hope that this is the correct name) disconnected or removed.  The coil sits near the coin mech in the door and can make an awful hum or chatter.  IF you decide to fix the problem your ears may regret it.

As Ra stated, it is the lockout coil which is not de-energizing after the third coil is deposited. The problem could be in the feature unit; the line  unit open on 2nd step switch. After the third coin is deposited this switch opens and the current to the lockout coil is cut off thus de-energizing the coil and rejecting more coins.

What Richard said is what I wish I could have said because he is 100% correct!   Half of my EM's have this coil working properly and half don't.   I give a little  talk to those who want to play my slot machines.   1.  Don't put ANY beverages on top of or near my games.   I bought casino style drink  holders for that.  2.  NEVER bang or strike the glass.  3.  Pay attention to the lights which will tell you how many coins have been deposited.  4.  Most importantly,   HAVE FUN!

Its possible that the coin lock out armature has been removed.
This is the easiest fix when the coil stops working, just remove the armature.
A photo of the area behind the coin mechanism might be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

By removing the armature, you will permit the machine to take an unlimited number of coins. If only three coins are inserted then all is good. If more coins are inserted, beyond three, they will all be taken and end up in the hopper or cash box.  It seems to me that the coil is not de-energizing.

Sometimes the lockout armatures become magnetized. Remove it and smack it with a hammer.
Also the LO coil is turned off by an ‘open at max odds’ switch on the odds unit in the top unit. It is opened by a post on the white gear. Make sure it opens on max coin in.
