Total newbie to slot machines here. I'm more of a pinball guy.

New member on NLG as well.

I have a s2000 slot that works great...only problem is, the arm doesn't work. Does anyone have a link to step-by-step instructions on how to diagnose/repair this problem?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have step by step, but I would start by using the bet one credit button and see if it releases then. If it doesn't then look at the wiring to the handle release solenoid and the solenoid itself for the problem. Things can come loose and solenoids can go bad.

Welcome to NLG. Here's a shot of the solenoid. At the bottom of the solenoid is the plunger, it can be wired tied up if needed. I prefer to get them working myself.

The solenoid wiring seems intact. The plunger moves freely inside the solenoid coil.

As stated before, I can play the machine, but only by using the bet max button, or the bet one credit/spin reels buttons.

I'm guessing the lock-out solenoid isn't allowing the handle to work. I'm guessing I'll need to remove the handle assembly and maybe replace the coil next.

I'm familiar with pinball parts availability, and where to buy stuff. Any recommendations on where I can buy this coil?

  • Just a curious observer...
A signal from the mpu board (or I/O board) activates the solenoid coil, the solenoid coil could be ok and the problem is somewhere else. Before going to the trouble of replacing the coil I'd check to see if it is bad or not.

You can use a meter to check the solenoid coil, it should have two terminals where the wiring attaches. With the machine unplugged disconnect one or both wires from the solenoid coil. Set the meter to "resistance" (or continuity or ohms, whatever the meter calls the function) and touch the meter leads to the solenoid coil terminals. The meter should show a low resistance thru the coil, meaning it is ok. If you inspect the coil and it looks darkened that can be worrisome but doesn't always mean they are bad, just gotten heated from the years of being activated. The coil is just a few yards of small copper wire wound around a spool, each end of the wire is attached to one of the terminals.

The solenoid coils are available from various places, like slot machine parts companies. The coil wrapper may still have a readable number on it. But any slot machine parts place can find the right solenoid by knowing the type of machine you have. Here is an example of a place that has them:

Check the spring on the solenoid. If it's broken like the one in the picture it will not disengage. If it is good you can try a small shot of WD40 or similar on the plunger & work it back & forth a few times. It's not really supposed to lubed but sometimes it helps. If all else fails try swapping out the cabinet I/O (the one on the side of the MPU cage). I've had a bad I/O more than once that prevented the solenoid from working. Everything else functioned.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

I'm not sure what I did...but, for the moment, the handle is working.

I unplugged/re-plugged the connectors on the motherboard.

From being a pinball guy you understand the corrosion that can get on connectors. Pins and slots have more in common than you think. Good job, maybe an eraser if it gives you more static. Enjoy your game.

Unfortunately, my luck didn't last long.

The handle no longer works.

Try cleaning those connectors. You still may be on to something.
