S-AVP won't boot past Splash Screen
« on: December 07, 2020, 07:07:56 PM »
Received a casino fresh S-AVP 5 Reel BAM! game and didn't do any power on checks before disassembly due to most of it being unhooked and full of dirt, grime and casino funk.

Anyway, once washed, sanitized and reassembled I finally got around to checking it out.

Game didn't come with the License Dongle, so I put in some Show Boots and reinstalled the 3.0 Brainbox.

Upon powering it up I get the blue AVP splash screen on bottom monitor and nothing displayed on the top LCD.

But that is all it does. Never boots past the splash page.

As far as the top display, I have another one I can swap in as well as an extra Power Supply. But I know the monitor works, as I've used it for testing in other cabinets. So it could still be the top Power Supply.

Just looking now for a jumping off point on why it won't boot. The top display could still be directly related to that ss well. I don't know for sure though.

Should I start with a basic wipe, change it the PCI Card or could the whole MPU be at fault?

Looking for some suggestions. But either way I'll do all of that eventually. Fresh Batteries, check the Boot Chips, PCI Card and so forth.

Just wondering if you think I should start with the Diagnostic and EKey first.

Anyone seen this issue before and have a recommendation for a good starting point?

I didn't get that far this morning because I ran out of time and had to go to work.

Thanks,

Update....

Started up the game again this morning,  same issues.

Pulled Brainbox, changed batteries (all 3 were still within limits) and booted with Diagnostic and EKey.

Selected first 2 boxes under SafeRam and performed a wipe. It was successful.

No change, just displays AVP blue splash page on bottom display, reels turn slowly.

Installed a different PCI Card, reassembled and now bottom display reads No Sync. Don't know if I have a bad PCI Card now or not. Reinstalled old PCI and back to same blue screen. Nothing still on top display.

I have 2 extra Brainboxes, but they are in unknown condition as well.

Guess I'll give them a try tomorrow.

I had a similar issue, and spent months troubleshooting to no avail. It ended up being the ribbon cable between the brainbox and backplane. It had a loose connection on a random pin causing the same issue with no errors. I only discovered by accident when I had given up and the cable came loose from the connector in my hand. I replaced the cable with a new one and was back in action. I am in no way declaring myself an expert, just passing something that happened to me.

Thanks,

It's worth a try. I've got an extra ribbon cable in a machine I can swap it out with. That would be a great fix if it happens to be it.

I'll post again when I get more troubleshooting done.

Update,

So I can mark this "Topic Solved"

It was the Ribbon Cable.

Thanks for the inputs.
