Reel chips to increase payout % - notice a change?
« on: July 11, 2015, 10:26:58 AM »
My mom has a Double Cherry Bar S+ at her house and she wants larger payouts more often.  Here current chip is an SS4672 and it displays 0872 in the credits window.  According to the slot bible, this is a 87.5% payout.  Would we notice a difference by installed the SS4668?  Is only the one chip needed?

Yes, going from an 87.5 to 97, you will see a difference. Not guaranteed you will see larger wins, or just more frequent wins. That depends how the game was designed.

If you have a bill validator, you will also need a SET015 chip to enable the bill validator after changing the SS chip. If you do NOT have a bill validator, all you will need is the new SS chip.

Based on the table information, going from a 87% to a 97% chip will actually give you less pays on a per spin basis (from a win every 4.95 spins to a win every 5.25 spins).  However, on average, the pays will be slightly bigger.  If you want a machine that has a lot of "action" (pays out more often) you need to go to a multi-line game.  a 5 line game will pay almost every other spin, but not all spins are winners (you bet 5 coins and maybe get a 2 coin payout) but you have the illusion of more winning since coins are dropping more often.  Honestly, the difference is not very noticeable, most people cannot tell the difference between chips.  The only sure way is to go a multi-line game.

Thanks for the comments!  Living close to Vegas (I am in Phoenix), there seem to be plenty of slots floating around.  Is there a database where I can search by model/make/multi-line, etc?  Would be nice to know which S+ machines are 5-line games for example.

Thanks again for all the help and everyone's patience with a newbie. I'm more than happy to return the favor with pinball help/advice if I can :).

Thanks,
Brad

I love my multi line 5 reel IGT S2000 Butterfly Sevens! It's gets a TON of action...not huge wins all the time but plenty of them, and it's nice to have the backlit reels. Here's a video and picture I just found on the internet. I've found people are pricing S2000's quite low now so it might be something to consider over an S plus.

I think the S plus is a fun machine as well. Yes it might be better to look for that five line s plus machine that rickhunter mentioned. The one thing about the S2000 I posted is the backlit reels can be a bit tricky when it comes to changing bulbs on them, depending on the style. I didn't think it was too hard. As for working on them, from my short experience, I've found them to be just as easy as the s plus.

Generally, for the most available and cheapest parts, stick to IGT machines. They are simple to fix, and their is TONS of info on them here. If its happened in a S+ or S2000, we've seen it.

And just so you are aware, a 5-line game for an S+ is not going to be a snap to find. Yes, they are available, but they will run $125+. There are other game thieves that might give you more "play", even with a single line. wild Cherry comes to mind, as every Wild Cherry symbol on or within one position of payline pays a couple credits. Maybe a $50-60 game kit will freshen up the game and make you Mom happier. To me, the 5-line games are a ton of fun, I'm a sucker for them in a casino! But my wallet disagrees, as even though I'm winning every 2-3 spins, I'm constantly out of credits!

Check out the IGT S+ bible here:

http://newlifegames.net/igtbible/

The navigation links at the top lead to the different game themes.

3CM = 3 Coin Multiplier (ie. payouts increase by a multiple of how many coins were played) -- most games are coin multiplier games, including your mom's Double Cherry Bar.

3CBP = 3 Coin Buy-a-Pay (games like Sizzling 7s, where the first coin buys the "bar" pays, and the second coin buys the 7 pays -- if you only bet one coin and get three 7s, you won't get paid anything since you didn't buy the payout for the 7s)
