NXT2 operating temperatures
« on: January 21, 2016, 02:24:08 AM »
Hey guys,

When you have a chance, post up your NXT2 operating temperatures found under processor diagnostics.  Mine was running at 120 degrees which seemed a bit hot.  I suppose adding a second monitor will tax the video card and cpu harder.  Fans seem to be working and I removed them and cleaned them, along with the heatsink.  I assume the airflow should be blowing downward on the cpu?  The fan on the MPU case...pulling air in or blowing it out?

I also was curious about cpu maintenance.  Do these ever need thermal paste applied to them like a computer cpu?  When they dry out, the CPUs can run hot.  Thermal paste can really reduce cpu temps.

Thoughts?

Jason

They are basically a computer.  So yes, you should add new grease if you removed the heat sink.  Honestly though, these are low voltage pentium 4 chips, if you haven't removed the heatsink from the cpu, I wouldn't bother, but it certainly doesn't hurt and will probably lower your temps a bit if you use a good quality thermal compound.  The airflow on the cpu is downward, and the airflow on the mpu is going out, but you need the mpu cover to get the airflow going right.

My 2 CPUs run in the 80's.  Pics below after they were running for about 3 hours this morning.  Also, the weakest part of the NXT2 is the video card which relies on the case fan to keep it cool.  Case fan must blow inward to blow air over the heat sink on the video card, and the logic door must be closed for proper ventilation.
If it ain't broke don't mess with it.....

Dang, those are some cool temps Jeff!  I could get those with my NXT1 MPU, but this one runs quite a bit warmer.  Case fan is blowing inward toward the hard drive and the CPU fan is blowing down.  I do have a complete enclosure for this as well.  I washed and oiled the fans as well.  Looks like the CPU is temp controlled as it doesn't fire up immediately on a cold start.

Thanks,
Jason

Maybe the temperature sensor on your adasta board is defective.  I heard there was a firmware upgrade for them to fix some bugs.  Maybe yours doesn't have the update.  I have 4 NTX2 CPUs and they all run in the 80s.  My NTX3 CPUs run in the low 90s too.

Where is that sensor at?  Not much I can do about it anyway.  Could it be dirty or would that have any effect?

Not sure, but I think it's a chip on the adasta board.  Who did you get the CPU from?  Maybe they know.

I wonder if there is anything within diagnostics that would reflect the FW version to reveal whether or not the update has been done.
