5500 MPU issue - advice needed
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:15:54 PM »
I just received a 5500 mpu board and tray that claimed to be from a working machine however it doesn't seem to do anything at all. The battery was dead of course when it was delivered so replacing that was the first thing I did. I also examined the board looking for anything that seemed damaged but all appeared to look okay so I went ahead and installed my game chips correctly and installed it in my 5500 machine. I attempted to perform a safe ram clear just as I have before on all my other 5500's but I got nothing from this board. No error codes or anything at all on the display. The only thing it does is the spin, max bet and change buttons immediately begin flashing. Both the red and green lights for the bill validator were flashing too. I thought the mains that came in the board may have something wrong with them so I switched in a set of known good mains then reseated all the other socketed chips before attempting another safe ram clear but I still get nothing but flashing lights. Is there something else I can try or is the board junk?

Maybe the seller meant that mpu came from a working machine now that they removed that mpu and replaced it with a good one.

just a joke.

It sounds like you have tried just about everything to get it to run. Any recourse or chance of a return to the seller?

Well their website says that there are no returns on boards or other similar types of electronics but the description suggests that it was supposed to work. I'll email them about it but I'm quite sure I'll never see that $99.00 dollars again...

So just to update and complete this topic the board in question had apparently undergone some repairs in the past. An eprom socket had been changed and it had a couple jumper wires installed on the back of the board. It turned out to be 2 bad solder joints, one at the eprom repair and one at the jumper. I repaired those and now the board works.

The seller should take care of the problem if you received it and it didn't work. I believe you mentioned it was suppose to be in working condition. If you paid with Pay Pal you may have some recourse on getting your money back.

It probably wouldn't be worth the hassle. Although it was supposed to be working and wasn't when received it didn't take much to figure out what the problem was and fix it. If I had not been able to fix it then I would have emailed the company about it but at this point the board works so I'm cool with it even though $100 was a little steep even for a board with no problems. I've actually not been involved in this hobby that long, only about a year now but one thing I quickly learned is that any description of electronics should be taken with a grain of salt and that anything described as "untested" is junk 9 times out of 10.
