Hey guys,

I was having issues with the IDX X-10 coin acceptor that was in my Bally5500.
I was able to get that resolved but had to reset the CMOS as recommended by them when swapping the comparator unit.

However, ever since I did a CMOS reset I get the 54 error code pretty often and sometimes also the code 70.
Funny thing is it only happens when I use the arm to play, when I use the buttons everything works perfectly fine.
However after 2-3 times with the arm it's starting to give me the error, then it happens every single time.

I inspected the switch on the cash door and it does seem to activate properly. It's just somehow when I use the arm to spin the reel the error comes.
I tried doing another reset and that didnt help, the errors wont go away.

I played for months and never got any of those errors, they only appeared since I did a CMOS reset.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Thanks

  • Just a curious observer...
just an idea,,,

The error 54 "Drop Door Open" may refer to the security switch located in the machine stand (in the casino) where the overflow bucket is located. Coins are diverted to this bucket under the machine when the hopper gets full. The stand has a door with a lock and a security switch that is sensed by the mpu board. After you did the reset you may have enabled sensing on that switch or changed some setting having to do with that switch. Do you have a pair of loose/disconnected wires in the bottom of your cabinet that used to go to a security switch? They may be wadded up and erratically touching the metal chassis when you yank on the handle? Do a good inspection with a light down inside the lower cabinet on the right-hand side near the handle mechanical unit, look for any wires that may have gotten tangled in the works down there when the handed is pulled.

For the benefit of anyone reading this thread here is a list of the bally 5500 error codes:

Drop door errors 54 and 70 happening when you pull the handle, I believe it  is the cash can door above the pull handle. It is being jarred by the handle action and causing your error because the cash can door lock latch is not engaging fully with the switch. Common problem. You can go inside the machine look above the cash can and you will see a limit switch with 3 wires which is activated by the lock latch.  You can remove the wire from the com. Wire terminal and wire nut it together with the wire that is on the N.O. terminal. The third wire can remain on the switch.

Thanks a lot guys, I did see some coins in the hole where its supposed to go to the stand. I took them out.

When inspecting, I found a plug at the bottom of the machine that was not plugged in anything. I am not sure it's ever been plugged, here's how it looks:

Also I tested the cash door switch, it does seem like the tab rotating its clicking the switch properly. However it seems like it may be losing contact somehow, maybe the switch is defective or using the arm moves something.
There's 3 wires on that switch (cash door locking mecanism) , gray, yellow and orange. Is it orange and yellow I could connect together to bypass the switch? The gray is only a ground?
Would be great if anyone can confirm, I want to make sure I dont mess anything up.  Here's how it looks:

If the error go away, then I know for sure it's the switch on that lock the problem. The slot is mostly for my wife to play with, so I would just leave it that way.
If it's not it, then I guess I will need to investigate further.

Thanks

Awesome, that did the trick! no more error code :)
Thanks for the tip

I am now trying to replace the fluorecent from the door (the belly one). I bought a brand new F15T8 15 watt which works well because I tested it on the top light (head).
However it doesnt work in the belly, I use a voltage detector and I seem to be getting power at the fluorecent fixture. I was wondering is there an hidden switch or something to turn on the belly light? or it should just turn on by default?
Cant figure out whats going on, its a pretty tight space too in there.

I was able to fix my coin comparator earlier this week too. I was wondering, right now the machine is set for loonies (CAD), by changing the dip switch settings and reprogramming my coin comparator (IDX-10), would that be all thats needed to set it for quarters instead? My coin comparator supports multiple type of coin and I can program the number of credit; ie: 1 loonie = 4 credit, 1 quarter = 1 credit, however does the machine can handle multiple coin type or the hopper is only set to pay out with one?

Thanks

Seems like the issue with the belly light is the starter, I moved them around then it turned on. Will buy 3 brand new ones tomorrow. :)

The shelf wheel on the hopper will have to be changed to a quarter size to dispense the quarters properly. After you change the shelf wheel adjust the coin knife to the shelf wheel. Check the rubber star shaped agitator as the rubber deteriorates from age and turns into very sticky messy tar.
