S9000 doesn't boot - Lights flicker, reels twitch up and down
« on: October 21, 2023, 01:11:58 PM »
UPDATE:

These issues were fixed by replacing the 5/12v power supply.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone, I recently picked up an S9000 that doesn't want to boot. When all three switches are flipped, it makes a loud continuous buzzing noise, all five reels begin twitching up and down, and the bottom light flickers on and off. Has anyone encountered this before?

The OS is AVOS 336-04. I also need a clear card (335) if anyone has one.

This thread probably has the information you need to fix your buzzing issue.  Member RB maybe able to supply you with the cards/chips you'll need to correct it.  You have to have a few posts before you can send him a private message though.  Hopefully he'll see this and contact you.

Thanks, Tilt. I'm thinking one of the power supplies has gone bad. Do we know which components typically fail on these and how to test? I would love to just solder in a new component rather than buy a whole new power supply.

Caps are often the culprit with power supplies, not just a single component.  Do you have other problems too?  Just wondering why you're leaning towards a power supply?

No other problems that I know of, since the machine isn't actually booting up. I'm leaning towards thinking the power supply might be bad because the flickering coincides precisely with the twitching of the reels. It seems to me that there is a system-wide power issue.

Ok, well you can always grab a multimeter and check the output voltages of the power supplies and figure out if that's an issue or not.  I'd be more inclined to think it's related to the post I referenced though.

Yeah, I'll definitely have to do that next week. By the way, which post were you referring to? I couldn't find a hyperlink in your reply, maybe I missed something.

Well, dang! That does not seem like a fun problem to have. I forgot to mention something important: In addition to the lower cabinet light, one of the status lights above the switches for the power supplies also blinks at the same rate. This is the biggest clue that leads me to believe I'm dealing with a power issue.

Well it's possible.  The power supply may be trying to come up and then shutting down.  Check it with meter and if it's within reasonable range of it's rated output I'd look at the solution in the other post.

It is probably power supply.  I've had that on fresh off casino machines.

Good call. I just measured voltage using the test points above the power supply switches, and the 5/12v power supply is bad. Rick, do you have experience repairing these? Is there a way to test the caps, or do you typically just replace all of them?

I just replace the ones that are bulging, they are easy enough to identify.  That usually fixes the issue.  Have you pulled out the 5/12v power supply and looked inside at the caps?

None of the the capacitors are bulging... I'm thinking I should just buy a working power supply unless there's a method for testing the individual components.

If you pull the mpu out so that it is not making contact with the backplane, does it still act weird?

Yup, still observing the exact same behavior even with MPU pulled. I've ordered a working power supply, hopefully I'll be all set once I install it

UPDATE: Fixed.

As I suspected, replacing the 5/12v power supply fixed these issues.
