E-2000 Project - Bringing it back to life!
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:40:09 PM »
Hello All

I'm working on my first E-2000 project.   So to make a very long story short, almost had the machine running when a coin bounced on-to the hopper control board and tripped the arc-fault breaker for the circuit it was plugged into.  No fuses blown, but had to go clean my shorts!

Send my MPU and 1/0 boards off to dhells and had him check them out, had to fix a couple of things (may or maynot be related) but all checked out and returned to me. (Thanks Dan!)

Now when I start the machine i get the 50 000 in the display board but I don't hear any of the other relays do there startup, but here is where it gets me stuck (no audio either)

I've checked the door cherry switch and it works and signals the 1/0 board on J3 - 3,  There is 53vdc out on j2 - 19 (service light?) but the bulb won't light or power to the bulb.

sometimes I can select the test modes:

Test 1: give me an initial 1 then 000001 then 50 000 but no action when the coin switch is deflected

Test 2: give me an initial 2 then 888888 then 2..1.1.0.1 and the tilt light doesn't light and it stops there.  (note that the reset will not get it out of test 2, have to press the test button to reselect test 1

Other things checked
All 7 fuzes are good and power is present on all
Power supply has been load tested and voltages are correct under load

MPU power is correct, but I'm seeing only 3 VDC on J1-4 when connected. (when not connected I get 9.5 to 10 VDC)

1/0 board power seems correct

hopper control board power seems correct

Not sure where else to go

I'll keep reading other posts, but if anyone has an idea I'm willing to try

- Joe

Yes,

Dan gave them a clean bill of health on his tester MPU's and 1/0 (even sent him a spare one that I picked up from FOXSLOTS out of FL to validate)  The only thing he found on the MPU that was in the system when the accident happened was a shorted bipolar prom and a bad IC

Both MPUs do the same thing.

Have you checked your power supply's voltages, 5v,7.5,10v? When that coin got into your hopper control board did it blow out a trace on the board? I've had that happen or found that many times..

Gary,

That is a good point, I'll go back and check,  I did trace each power and ground on the MPU, 1/0, Hopper,  Sound board to make sure the proper voltage and signals where at each location.   I'll pull the hopper and check the traces on the PS on J1 and not just the test points.

Can someone who has a E2000 check the voltage of the MPU J1 - Pin 4 to see what power drop they have on a running system?  That is still suspect for me as I'm only seeing about 3 VDC

Gary (and all)

All the J1 power supply voltages check out,  I guess tomorrow I'll have to start tracing the secondary transformers off the back side of the PS.

After sleeping on it, do I possible have a bad relay?  There are 5 that I can see, but a couple of them are marked "progressive ...."   Two of them are 6 volt and three are 48 volt.  Its odd that the 1/0 board is calling for the maintenance light to turn on but no light comes on . .

Well it finally happened, I stumbled across the problem spot.

The AS2985-5 (16 conductor) cable between the MPU and I/O board was the problem child.   I had broken a conductor on the original cable so I ordered two spare ones.  Well I swapped out that cable for the other new one and all works!
I was comparing the replacement one with the original and it seems that the pins on the new cables are a bit shorter (by a mm or so).   I'm going to have a chat with the seller of the replacement cables.

So the symptoms of this issue was:
  • MPU works correctly, but hangs on tests
  • The machine comes up in odd states and stays stuck (hopper motor runs or some lights dont change)
  • No audio
  • Sometimes you can not select tests
  • rest works but hangs on startup
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Sounds like you still have a problem with the MPU. Have you removed the board and checked for bad solder joints on the IC sockets? I would pull all the removable chips and cleaned the legs. These Bally IC sockets only make contact on one side of each of the legs, not the best connections.

Gary,

I had Dan run the boards, so I'm pretty sure they are ok.   Also I did solve it as it turned out to be the data cable between the MPU and the I/O Board

Thanks for the suggestion
