Bally E-1000 CPU Mystery problem.

I collect an old Bally slot, with E-1000 CPU AS 2978-3 with small RAM Board.

Ram board connector was acid damage.
I replace RAM board connector to new one, and put new battery.

Machine make power on (or by reset) selftest without any error.
After self test on display 500000  (not 50 000), (all digit light), but not the same brightness.

When I push test button on  display show 1, and when released go to 500000.

After pressing the test button change to  other digits  lighter.

When put out ram it give RAM error, when I put incorrect eprom give incorrect eprom error.

I burnt new Eprom set, and put in , I have same problem.


I check  Power Supply voltage and  connector too.
Swap Power Supply an IO board from another machine, same problem.

I did a test environment on the table, with  laboratory power supply and I make zero crossing circuit, same as on original power supply, but I have same problem on the table.

I double checked RAM connector signals on RAM with oscilloscope too all signal looks good.

I check data bus  address bus control signal, interrupt line, reset line, zero crossing interrupt , control decoder input-output, address decoder input output , interrupt decoder input output too.


I swap all ttl IC witch was in socket.
I swap bus driver IC  U7, U8 8T28, same problem.


I swap RAM, CPU interrupt decoder prom and control decoder prom (from another E-2000 board), I have same problem.


I thought it's interrupt problem, I swap U5 74LS132 same problem.

I swap on ram board U5 74LS27 too.

Everything looks good but it is not working good.

I can't realize for 2 weeks ago what is the problem.

Does anyone have any idea what it even is checked what could be wrong?

Normally when you see a 500000 error (not 50 000) it is an indication that the MPU
is not talking to the IO board. The cable is either bad or installed backwards. The red stripe
on the cable should be pointing down towards the bottom of the board on both the MPU and
IO boards.

I should have also said that it could be the IO board too and if it were the IO board, I would
suspect the address proms.

Looks like you have the best guy to help you out -DHELLIS-...He helped me with one of my clients E-1000 and is the best out there...Check out what he suggested as he knows his stuff...Also, he has all the test gear if you decide you want all you boards checked...

I checked cable direction, and messed all pin in the cable.

Cable from CPU  go to  IO Board and to double progressive (magnetic) display (paralell) .

This IO board works good in the other machine.

When I pull out M7 give 5.6.4.3.2.1.  and 8888 and go to power on selftest.

I think its good program verison should be 5.64.


When I put Ram clear chip into M7

and repeat it, not stopped at small o.  as  in the my another machine with has e2000 CPU board.
It's normal or should br stopped on o. in E-1000 board as in E-2000?

With M7 out of the board you are getting the display that is expected. According to my
test procedure manuals, the ram test should end at 'c' for the E1000 MPU board

Ram clear chip should be stopped, or restart normal?

Where can I buy programmed proms for E-1000 board?

I saw, I can buy new empty.

I hope I can programing it, but has anyone contents?

All proms on E-2000 board different or interrupt decoder  or control decoder content same?

On the E1000 board the ram test should stop once it shows 'c'

What proms are you looking for?

There are 3 biploar proms on the MPU board, on the E1000 board these are U21, U25 and U29
on the E2000 board they are U8, U17 and U19

The only common prom is U8 on the E2000 and U21 on the E1000, the other 2 proms are
different.

I don't uderstand RAM 5101 handle
 A7 address why go through 74166 shift register which cont 4 me- signal, and clear intackt-.

I looked at my manual again and the tested on a E1000 MPU board, the test does continue
and what the manual really says is that power should not be turned off until you see the 'c'

Sorry about that because I think I was misleading you a bit.

As far as the shift register, I am not sure I understand it myself, but the 5101 ram chips
are 4 bits by 256 bits or 1024 bits total

The 5101 is configured as 32 rows and 32 columns, address lines A0, thru A4 are address buffers, that trigger the memory  rows, address lines A5 thru A7 are column select

U29 prom was bad.

Progressive display working and  incrementing while i play with machine.

How can I enter to programming   progressive display on E-1000 machine?
