« on: December 06, 2020, 04:17:08 PM »
anyone know what causes this?

i thought it was a break in the plastic coating on the back side, so i removed it...its still there.
cant feel any raise or indent where the marks are
i have 3 pieces of glass like this, but this is the worst one ive seen so far.

they look like snow flakes but i assure you, they are not

I have seen sh!t like that numerous times on monitor glass from machines that were sitting in the bitter cold for long periods. That's my guess but crazy you can't wipe it off after removing the clear film..

unless its on the front, which it sure doesnt look like it when looking at both sides...i have not cut and removed that film yet..thats my next option
its a shame because the glass is perfect, except those spots, which of course, look terrible and cannot be used on a nice machine

not sure if i can use the glass after i cut and remove the film on the front, even if it does make the marks go away.

That film on the backside of the glass has some sticky adhesive.

There shouldn't be any "film" on the front of the glass....only glass.
Once you remove the distorted Mylar from the back, you will have to remove the adhesive that held the clear Mylar to the glass as well.
You MUST cut all the way around the edge thru and to the glass or you will remove graphics you don't want to remove.

Use Goo B Gone to remove the adhesive only and rinse with Windex and dry with paper towels.
I had to do it once when someone sold me a reel glass with scratches on the Mylar... :banghead:

The pattern on that suggests crystallization due to freezing temperatures.  The adhesive got so cold it began to crystalize, thus creating that pattern.  Since I live in Florida, that has never happened to me, but I would suspect that hitting the front of the glass with a heat gun, might "melt" the glue and get rid of the pattern?  I would also suspect that if it gets too hot, it might warp the backing as well, so cutting out and cleaning seems to be the more appropriate method here.

ive cleaned the glass with windex, goo gone,  krud kutter...im down to the glass..ive used my exacto knife to scrape a corner of the glass to make sure there's nothing else there...there was a film that I removed after the initial outter layer.
the machines came from Detroit, so not surprising about the cold, however, this just looks so crazy to me
I cannot feel any etching from the design and it does look very neat, but its a real pain in the butt...
so far, it has ruined the glass..hopefully someone else has an idea

thanks!!!

I've had several of my machines upstairs in an unheated unfinished detached garage in mid-Michigan for years now and never have seen anything like that on any of them.   Sometimes I fire them up in the dead of the winter to check or test something and the only thing the cold seems to effect is the bill validators.  They get real sluggish and slow.  I'm not sure what caused that, but I doubt it was from being exposed to cold temperature.

My first thought was that it's fungus.  I know camera lenses HAVE to have light through them periodically or else they can grow fungus.  Google it and look at some images, some look like crystals.
