Noisy power distribution box (meters actually)
« on: September 29, 2019, 02:39:43 PM »
My S2000 has recently started to make an annoying noise that seems to be coming from the power distribution box.  It sounds like a spinning fan that is hitting something.  When I remove the coin hopper and stick my head into the machine, it appears to be coming from what I believe is the power distribution box (the box that the external plus goes into and has a 110V outlet).

Is this the likely source of the noise?
Is there a fan or other part inside the box that could be making the sound?
If so, can I open the box and attempt repairs?
If I want to replace the part, is it plug and play or is the installation more involved?
Thanks,

There's no moving parts inside there. It is easy to replace. No setup required. I have some available but not sure that's your problem. I have had a power supply make a clicking noise before. It eventually died.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Are you sure it's not the fan?? I'd stick something in it to stop the fan momentarily.

Might be something touching your MPU panel box fan?  :Scratch-Head:

There's no fan in the power distribution box like RB said.

It's not the fan in the top box as that is making it's normal, quiet hum.  Are there any other fans?

It really sounds like it is coming from the power distribution box.  Perhaps it's an electronic switch rapidly opening and closing?

It might be a bad capacitor.

I made a dumb mistake...on my table behind me is the guts of a Game King.....in a GK, they have a fan in the MPU panel box. Sorry!! :duh:
All my 2000's only have a topbox fan.
Can you make a video with the microphone of the camera up close to the source of the clicking sound and post it here?

I've been sitting on this for a while but finally put a new power distribution box in.  It didn't make any difference.  As previously suggested, I did a poor quality video of the sound.  The video isn't stereo so it doesn't really have directional sound.  It seems like the sound is coming from the back of the machine somewhere.  Here's the video link:

That is analog meters running or fan blades rubbing is my guess.

That’s your meters as a fan would be a faster click.
Put your hand on your meters if you don’t see the numbers changing.

As Paul mentioned it sounds like your meters. Pull the plug off your meters and put a jumper across the black/orange and brown/ lite blue wire. The 2 wires will be next to each other on one end of the plug. That will take care of the clicking. Here is a pic of the jumper on the plug. I use a small piece of wire like a small paper clip and bend it and plug it in and tape it.

Yep, meters.  Leave it on and it will eventually stop when the meters catch with the last transaction (big win, cashout, etc).  Like others have said you can pull the plug and install a jumper to bypass them.

I don't know what meters are being referenced.  Where are they located and where is the wiring harness that needs a jumper?

Also, if you use a jumper across the wires, how do you plug it back into the other side of the harness?

Meters are usually below the cash box on the right side when you open the door. Post a pic of the inside of your machine.

If you don’t have mechanical meters, perhaps the ballast is going bad.

That would be located above the CPU. It is a small 2 x 2.5 x 1 inch box connected to the fluorescent tube. The output is on the left side of the ballast (closer to the tube) and the ballast’s power input connector is on the back side

If you are paranoid about the power supply kicking the bucket on startup like I am, take the meters :Professor:

Then I hope... ( after turning off, disconnecting the ballast power input and re-powering the machine ) the noise will vanish.

I found the meters and that appears to be where the noise is coming from.  I removed them to get better access to the wiring harness and then put the jumper across the two wires.  I'm not going to be able to plug the wiring harness back in with the jumper in place.  Am I supposed to leave the meters disconnected?  I have played it and seems to work just fine and, obviously, I don't need the meters for regulatory compliance or accounting purposes  :)) .  Thanks for the help!
