Power problem with PE Poker machine
« on: October 12, 2020, 09:59:41 AM »
Good day all --

I recently acquired a non-working IGT PE poker machine. When I turn it on, the fluorescent light comes on, but nothing else. I spoke to Badbaud (Alan) at his shop in Las Vegas. He said to check out the green wire/pin that comes from the small transformer on the board. I did, and it is showing some discoloration consistent with excessive heat. I replaced the pin and verified continuity.

I tested the voltages coming out of the transformer with no board connected. Here is what I got on taps 1-4:

1: 0.06 VAC
2: 117.3 VAC
3: 119 VAC
4. Fluctuates wildly between 2.6 VAC and 4.7 VAC

I couldn't reach the other connectors to measure directly. When I measure the voltages at the fuses inside the machine, I get about 12 VAC where it should be 24 VAC.

I also noticed some brown heat damage to the circuit board material in the vicinity of CR39 (5.1V Zener diode).

Any thoughts on what the issue might be, and what I should try next?

I picked up a used main transformer for a PE+. I haven't tried it yet. I have to look up the specs to see if I can use it in this machine.

See photos for additional detail.

Your help would be most appreciated!

Regards,
Ethan

What part number is on the top of the transformer?  they used a different transformer in the poker machines, there was an isolated 115vac for the monitor, plus an input 115vac to step down to provide the other low level AC voltages.

I have the schematics for the machine, so I should be able to tell you the correct wiring and color code of the wiring.

Jim,

Thanks very much for your reply.

The part number on the top of the transformer installed in my machine is 560 019 90.

The one that I bought yesterday that was pulled from a PE+ is 5600 2792 Rev B

looked at the drawings I have, part no. 560-027-90 transformer has the following connections, pin1=common white/red, pin2= 115vac black/red, pin3=220vac black/violet, pin4=115vac isolated white/yellow, pin5=115vac isolated black/yellow, pin6=24vac orange/green, pin724vac orange/black, pin8=7vac blue/black, pin9=7vac blue/green.

attached is a picture of the replacement transformer you acquired,  from the looks at your transformer they didn't have a pin for 220 operation??

Hope this helps with your problem!

Ethan,Did you re-pin the small transformer connector and install the header I gave you?

Alan,

Yes, thanks again for your help and advice! I did replace the header and the pin on the green wire. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference. I checked continuity to ensure that there is a connection between the green wire and the board.

I realized this morning while looking at the PE Poker manual (from the downloads section) that I was checking the main transformer voltages incorrectly. So I'll go back and test those again and see what I get.

Is the "burned" Zener diode (CR29) a problem? Or is some discoloration of the board normal because it gets hot during normal operation?

Regards,
Ethan

Jim,

Thank you so much for the photos and data. I really appreciate it! I'm determined to get this machine working, and I'm still pretty new to working on slot machines. This is my 7th machine, but only my 2nd IGT and my first PE Poker.

Alan said he's never seen one of the main transformers go bad, but I had driven 180 miles to KLAR Slots, so I bought the PE+ transformer just in case. Never hurts to have spare parts around.

Speaking of Alan's store, it's awesome! I spent way more money on parts than I had intended because there was just so much cool stuff. He has parts for every machine that I own. I will definitely be making that place a regular destination. Plus he is helpful, knowledgeable and willing to dispense invaluable advice to a clueless noob like me.

Thanks again, Jim!

Ethan

Did you take the board or monitor or machine when you went to his place?
