Barcrest Issue with power, burning plug
« on: October 08, 2021, 04:33:31 PM »
I have a IGT Barcrest DD with Cheese.  :EmoticonHelp4:   The top right pin was burning which caused the top panel to cut off. I think I know why... but still a bit confused as I don't have much electrical experience like this, and I don't want to damage the top panel.
Reason possibility, I installed a 12v fan, where the old 24v fan used to be (I didn't realize till later).  The fan was working fine, but this is when I first noticed the top panel having issues. Coincidence maybe?   Looking at the wiring, the fan is not even that top right pin, the fan 4 pins below it, and did not have any burning.  Also the actual fan wiring comes out of a little panel on the back.  The burning pin goes directly into the top LED panel, and also started to burn the panel plug.

I redirected the 12v fan to an external plug, so that would no longer be an issue, I also scraped the burnt pins to make a solid connection, and I tested it.  The top panel worked fine, it did not flicker off, and I heat tested all spots for an hour, and the temperature did not exceed 85.

It looks really bad in the pics, but is actually working now.  Can anyone give me some advise, or a confirmation that the fan was the problem?  It's confusing, and honestly a bit scary.

Thanks for reading, and replying with any info at all.
Carl

The pin that is burnt is the +13VDC output. If you can clean up the connections you may be OK - but the reason it looks like that is too much current was ran through the pin. Most likely caused by a bad connection there or the solder joints on the power supply board where it is connected. Those pins degrade over time and need to be re soldered when the caps are replaced in the PS.

The 12 V fan will probably spin twice as fast as it is rated with 24 VDC going to it, and it will pull twice the current. I would put a 24 VDC fan in there.

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

I have this same problem with two machines. DDD with Cheese, and Quackshot. Seems that all that top box lighting is sucking a lot of amperage. I have cleaned up connections a few times now over the years to keep those top boxes lit. I think your issue likely has noting to do with a fan.
