Test Button Not Working: Bally Alpha Pro 22/22
« on: January 04, 2021, 03:59:13 AM »
Hi guys,

My Bally 22/22 machine was working fine and turned it on, played it and decided to install a new game. Installation worked fine but when it reloaded and came to the final screen to set up the machine, I pressed the "Test" button which usually goes into the installation menu but it didnt work, tried it a few times and still no luck.

I have changed the batteries, clear ramed it, installed new games and everything works fine until I need to press the white test button to set up the machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated although I am not very literate when it comes to slot tech talk lol.; Thanks in advance :)

Is the light on when the belly door is open?  If not, one of the switches is probably still closed preventing you from entering the setup menu.
If it ain't broke don't mess with it.....

Cheers idesign for your help once again. How do I open these switches and where would they be?

If the light is not on when you open the belly door look for white button or cherry switches, push or pull them to see if the light comes on.  Some machines are configured differently so depends on where the switches are.

Open the Ideck 'door' (yellow handle inside the machine, back left) along with the others. I have gotten Ballys that are wired where you don't need to pop the Ideck and some that do.

Thanks Idesign - once again you fixed the problem. Now a new problem occured. I couldnt get rid of the Open Door L error. From before I know the L Door is the small door that you open to install the game cards etc.

I have tried for the last forty minutes to get rid of it and I cant, I have tried so many times to close that door but the error keeps coming up.

I then remembered that with my other 22/22 machine that to get rid of the error you just have to plug in a spare jumper cable into the cpu connector at the front. I took the jumper cable connector (not sure if thats the name) from my other machine, plugged it into this one connected all the cables and the problem was fixed.

My questions is, obviously now my other machine wont work without the cable attached and I am going to put it back. Looking at this photo can i cut the cable of the jumper connector and will it work fine? or is there something else I can do to fix this problem?

Wait, you said the machine worked fine before you installed a new game.  So it never had a jumper to begin with and did not need one.  Does the L door have a thumb latch or lock on it?  The latch on the left that locks the CPU in place should be turned to lock it in.  That is connected with the L door switch.
If it ain't broke don't mess with it.....

You could just cut the cable a couple of inches above the connector, strip the ends and tie them together, then put some electrical tape to prevent shorts.  Or you could make your own jumper using a microfit Jr 2 pin connector a couple of crimp inserts and a wire loop.

Yes It worked fine and now not sure why the L won’t disappear, it has a latch on the left which I have turned and played with many times and that doesn’t work. Just out of ideas to solve this error.

The jumper from the other machine makes it work when I installed it, that’s just when I thought of the idea but hesitant to do it as really have no idea what I am doing lol

anywhere in the circled area would work, you just need to simulate the switch with tying both wires together.  This will not affect the CPU at all.  The only drawback to doing the permanent jumper thing is that if you ever want to install a game using USB media, you need to pull the jumper out before the install procedure and put it back after the install.

If you don't want to cut anything, since I see that you already have a thumblock to close/open the switch that is next to it, is to move one of the wires to the 3rd position on the switch that is by the Compact Flash door.  You can then test to make sure that when close the switch on the mpu lock side, that it is actually closed (if it isn't then you moved the wrong wire).  This is the procedure I do to my alpha CPU's this way you retain the ability to install USB media games without having to pull the mpu out and have to undo all the cabling, etc.

Thanks Rick, much appreciated!
If i dont have to cut I definitely wont. Are you talking about the two pinkish cords in this photo? Are you saying just to move one to the top one (which isnt connected to anything) and if that works great, if not try the other cable?

yes, move it so that there's an empty one in the middle.  But not the one pictured, the one by the little door where the CF cards go.  You will probably have to remove the power supply to gain access to it, or at least remove the video card and the riser.
