Tech Support for MPU repair
« on: May 20, 2021, 04:27:47 AM »
Is there anyone on this forum who repairs MPU's and who offers technical advice for troubleshooting and repairs to boards?  Several websites offer lots of help on DIY board repairs to pinball machines, but I don't see that on this site for slot machines.  Seems like here people just replace non working boards.  I've repaired a few slot boards, but have one that has me stumped.  I could use some technical support if possible.

The board in question previously had some minor battery damage.  Cleaned up and replaced a few parts....did a clear then installed game ROM.  Powered on and got error 61.  Will not proceed past that error code.

I think member "lookes" has been doing repairs. There is some post on some S2000 board repair. But for the most part,  the acid damage ruins the traces under the coating . I wish there was someone that could start a reingineered  504 MPU for  home use ,  as good original boards are most non existent.

The pinball guys have been doing arcade boards for years and successful at reengineering  them.

There is a very large demand for 504 MPU.  There is thousands of S2000 machines scrapped and it's ongoing now because the machines have been  and are still  sitting in warehouses with damage of acid from the battery on the board .  I can buy a load of S2000 at $50 per machine,  but I will no longer buy any due the fact there is no MPU's available.

It sounds like you have a IGT S+ given the error 61.

61 is the standard error you get after a game change and it indicates that your motherboard CMOS is not in alignment with your MPU CMOS.
This also happens after a battery change.

If you look a Ricks FAQs (bottom right main page) there are instructions to follow after the game change.
Your 61 becomes a 61-1 then it clears and you play your game :)

Sometimes after a battery change you get into a 61 loop, 61 becomes 61-1, becomes 61, becomes 61-1 and so on, just never clears.
In this case you need a Clear Chip - it brings the machine back to factory.
You will likely need a SET chip. The SET chip is needed to activate the bill validator.
The use of both these chips can be found under Ricks FAQs as well.

For board repair (which at this point it doesn't sound like you need) members BadBaud and ChannelManiac would be good resources.

I am currently just repairing and refurbishing 50X boards. I have developed methods of chemically and physically stabilizing the varta damage, and then patching the damaged traces that seems to be very reliable. Of course not all boards are electrolytically or chemically damaged and just need the usual types of electronic repairs. I haven't 'advertised' this service yet as I want to be sure of reliability, and streamline the process so I don't have to charge too many dollars for repairs due to the time it takes. lol.... Enough people have sent boards that I guess it's not a secret anymore.

I pretty much know what the limits of repairable damage look like, and have not failed yet on one. I don't just repair the door open problems. Some of the traces have other important signals on them, including the serial signals for TITO.

I am already planning on building another test and repair fixture for 1270 boards and/or another for 50X's. The one I built for 50X boards is busy most of the time. I test all repaired boards for 12 hours or so. If they are still spinning in the morning, they should last a long time.
I have a pretty good backlog of boards at this time to repair/refurbish. As soon as I get caught up with them, I will be ready to accept more. Don't throw them out or give up hope yet!

What I meant by "will not proceed past that error code" was the test button doesn't do anything.  Can not proceed to get the 61-1.  I understand the reset procedure after replacing a battery, or doing a RAM clear.  I did a RAM clear.  Didn't help.  Other boards work in the machine, so I have ruled out the motherboard, door optics, etc....  It is something on the processor board.  And the battery damage was very minor.  In fact, if I didn't tell you it was damaged you probably would never notice.  But....there is a bad component or two on the board.  Just don't know which one(s).  I will reach out to Lookes for possible help.  His test unit looks fantastic!

Here is the board.  As you can see, (or not see), the extent of the battery damage.  It was so slight was almost non existent.  I replaced 4 diodes and the power header pins.  There was one trace that I jumpered on the backside.  Now I am assuming there is still one or more components failed, maybe having nothing to do with the initial battery failure.

Tried that.  Didn't help.

After I do a clear, without the coin hopper installed, everything appears normal.  The reels spin up then the "insert coin" lights up.  But when I drop a coin it goes straight to the tray.  The pseudo test button on the optics board works and I can play the credit.  But the coin comparitor doesn't appear to work, as it doesn't issue a credit (bet).  It does with a different MPU in the machine.  So, what on the MPU would cause it not to accept a coin?
