How to: Burn a set of game chips
« on: November 28, 2020, 07:05:44 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone have suggestions on how to burn a set of game chips?
I have a GQ-4X Universal programmer and would like to change out the game in my PE+ from a poker to Double Jackpot Slots.
I also have some Winbond W27C512-45Z EEPROMS.
Can you use the ROM files from MAME to burn a set of working chips?

Thanks
Dennis

The files from a MAME will work, but I doubt if your GQ-4X will be able to burn a CAP chip which is needed to get the correct colors.  The CG files you'll probably have to use a hex editor and copy the file twice in order to burn it to a W27C512.  I've only worked with Superboards which support multigame ROMs, so I really can't tell you much more than that.  Hopefully someone will come along who has more experience than I do and let you know about the CAP chip and if you need create a 512k file by copying the 256k file twice or not.

I had A feeling it was something to do with offsetting the data to get it at the address it was expected to be at.
I will try to see if I can figure how to get that part worked out.

No worries on the CAP chip, I have some adapter boards I built for sticking a 27c512 in place of the CAP chip.
Its way over kill but I have plenty of them and they were cheap so its fine...

I just took a look at my files and I made 64kb files to burn to 27C512's.  Don't remember if I had to or not, I think I just did it to be safe.  I use a little program called Hexedit to open the 32kb .bin file, then edit->select all, move to the end of file, edit ->paste and save it.  Then you have a 64k file that is 2 copies of the 32k file ready to write to the 27C512.  I got all my multi-poker sets from MAME sites and they work fine.

I really like using the Winbond EEPROMs, they have fast access time, program quickly, and you don't have to mess with a UV eraser if you want to reuse one.    I can send you the Hexedit program if you PM an address.

I think I remember seeing that on the old board now.  I'd be interested in getting a couple of them if you have any extras you're willing to sell.

Thanks for the reply Tilt,
Thank you for the offer of the HexEdit program,
I remembered after reading your post that there is a way to copy binary files, appending them together one after the another from a command prompt in windows.
ex. copy mbo-cg0911.u74 /B + mbo-cg0911.u74 /B MyNewRom.bin /B
I actually did this until the file size was 512k, probably not required but it didn't hurt anything either.
It worked like a charm and I had everything up and running in less than 20 minutes.

I have the parts to solder up 2 extra adapters if you want them, just PM me an address.
