Here is a PSR for SP830 used in type 14 tournament games. Read down to where it has the setup information for tournament.
I'm sure it's the same for the SP735

Thanks for the clarification Knagl and Ohio! I was not aware an ST chip would allow non-tournament mode! Good to know!

But BV will not be functional whenever in tournament mode, correct? Regardless of whether or not it is enable in menu?

Correct. ...and all coins would be rejected to the tray, too, if one attempted to insert coins.

As far as the standard mode for tournament chips, the following chart lists the known S+ tournament chips. The "SS Equivalent" column lists the SS chip that the tournament chip acts like when in non-tournament mode.

That's just a lock for the MPU tray...With the power turned off, you shold be able to pull up on that big black knob on the MPU tray and it should come straight upwards to take out.
If not, then turn the key, and pull up on the MPU tray knob.
It should release.

Bunker, I have had machines with that key also. They were key switches. Never mattered which way it was turned as it did not seem to change anything.

Some casinos (well, most) lock the MPUs. We've found dozens (hundreds maybe) of sets of keys in the bottom of the machines fresh from casinos. If not, you have to drill it.

I agree folks...the only way to know what's under it is to pull out the MPU tray
and see if the key is being used as a lock or a keyswitch?

I had one of these once and it had a couple of wires going to it.
I think the wires were carrying the signals to the MPU or COM circuit board to the backroom...if someone opened it.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Make the most sense I know of. And explains why turning it doesn't change anything with the machine.

I have installed a sp 1274 and a SS 4270. All I get is a code 65 3 in the winner paid window. It does not self check at all.

According to the S+ error (tilt) codes that when the 65-3 comes up to turn the reset key once for the machine to continue. Or open the door and hold the reset button for 2-3 seconds.

Uh, lets not confuse a 65-3 with a 65-1 or 65-2. A 65-3 is cleared with a turn of the jackpot reset key. Pressing the self test will NOT clear a 65-3. Lets take it ONE error at a time.

Bad EEPROM device

Replace EEPROM with a blank one.

65_1

Bad EEPROM data

Open door and press self test button for 1 to 2 seconds.

65_2

Game type mismatch

Open door and press self test button for 1 to 2 seconds.

65_3

Game options & meters not in most current format

Recover options & meters by using correct set chip.ORTurn jackpot reset key to continue power-up procedure. Game will be upgraded to most current format. See 65_1 or 65_2.

none of these work at all. I have been trying to convert this tournament machine to a standard play double diamond. I have used the set chip and the clear game chip first. I have no bill validator operating nor do I have any coin mechanism. Maybe this is the problem. It does read 61 when it comes on and then goes to 61-1 when I hold the self check button...but then it stops there. When I close the door...nothing just a 61-1. When I turn the reset key with the door shut, it gives me a menu of items and eventually gives me the 65-3 that I mentioned. Any ideas?

When 65-3 is displayed .. Close door and turn reset key.

You are soooo close I can taste it!

Go through the steps ONE MORE time, and follow the directions EXACTLY. I know it seems petty, but even the slightest of misstep will not clear the error (or worse, make it worse off). Like turning the key with the door open, versus turning the key with the door closed will not accomplish the same thing.

So...turn machine ON.

At 61, press self test button 2-3 seconds to get 61-1 (and maybe a DING).
At 61-1, CLOSE THE DOOR and turn little brass key on side of machine (jackpot reset key).
At 65, KEEP the DOOR CLOSED and turn the jackpot reset key ONE more time.

I followed your directions exactly. At 61 I pressed mthe reset button and got a ding and 61-1. I closed the door and turned the reset kep and it gave me a 65-3. I turned it again and it gave me a 65-1. I turned it again and it clicked and a 01 in the wi9nner paid window & 1 in the credits paid window. I believe it is in check mode now and will go through several different numbers as I turn the reset key or hit the spin reels button. ?

Close door and turn jackpot reset key.
then 65_3

Turn jackpot reset key to continue power-up procedure. Game will be upgraded to most current format. See 65_1 or 65_2.

65_1

Open door and press self test button for 1 to 2 seconds.

close door and game should boot. After all this is cleared and booted. Install BV chip and enable BV and set denom.

Then when you have replaced the 1274 you will have to do the 61 thing again. Once you get to that point you will have to set options and limits for credits etc. We will walk you through that when your ready. It is very easy.

You were doing just perfect, but that SECOND turn of the key (at 65-1) took you into the program (that's what turning the key too many times, or turning key at wrong time will do).

Now, you will need to KEEP turning the key to exit the program. Keep flipping the key until displays blank for 1-2 seconds and returns to the 65-1.

Now, at 65-1, proceed with the instructions for 65-1 as given previously (Open door and press self test button for 1 to 2 seconds. Then CLOSE the door and game should boot.) You do not have a bill validator, so you can will not need to perform the BV SET chip.
