S+ Newbie
« on: September 09, 2014, 04:04:53 PM »
Bought an S+ at a yard sale.  Plugged it in and had error 61.  Opened door hit white reset button and heard a tone then closed the door to an error 61-1 , used rest key on side to clear code.  The 61 error returns and now the white reset button inside no longer responds, side reset key will move code but it comes back.  Anyone care to help?  Any direction appreciated.  John

At this point your reset key is only doing accounting. You say 61 then 61-1, turned key then back to 61 right? You have a couple things to check. 1 make sure the cashbox door is actually closed. When you open the door on it you will see 2 green wires attached to a switch on door. Cut those wires and splice together. 2 Open belly door and look at upper left to see if there is a switch there. If yes splice those 2 wires also. With those out of the loop we can narrow it down easier. Next you will find 2 optics, 1 on the machine just above the bill validator and 1 on the door side. Place a piece of painters tape on the cabinet side next to it and make a pencil mark where it is. Then do the same on the door side. Close the door and push latch all the way down. Check to see if the marks align. If not the cabinet side has up and down adjustment. Unless these optics see the door as closed it won't proceed. If all of this fails you may need a clear and set chip set. Do not do a clear unless one of us tells you to. It's another bowl of worms best left for another day. Oh yea, welcome to the site.

This machine does not accept bills, so maybe there is no cash box?
I did not see a switch in the upper left should, I look again?
The optics do line up perfect when door is closed.
I did notice the green light on the comaparator is not lit.

Actually get a clear chip and a set chip.
The clear chip will fix the stuck 61 problem. Resets the machine back to factory defaults.
The set chip is used to set the denomination of the machine and activates the bill validator.
Once a clear is done, the bill validator will not be active.
Chips are cheap - shipping is expensive so its better to buy both and combine the shipping.
Roz from Cvslots can fix you up.

Ros, your not disagreeing with me. I said not to use one unless one of us said to. Wanted him to check the normal stuff first. We see people clear machines quite often and say why.

the only way to fix this problem is to clear the ram.  you are in the 61 loop.  once you clear the ram, you will be taken through the same steps, 61, press white button, 61-1,  close door and latch closed,  turn reset key one time, displays go blank, program loads, maiden spin , now you will be able to see if you have any other problems. i.e. coin acceptance, etc.

HOWEVER, if you clear the machine, and you are still in the 61 loop, then the E-squared chip on the motherboard is bad, and has to be replaced.

Hope this helps

Jim

Thanks so far I think we are getting closer.
I cleared the machine and it seem to boot up fine.  The comparator still does not light up, and coins are dropping straight through,  I removed the rake and coins stayed inside but sill did not register. I checked the voltage to the comparator and it was only about .25 volts which is pretty low for anything but I do not know what it is supposed to be.  Any help now?

The light on the comparator only comes on when the machine has enabled it, which is typically only when the door is fully closed and latched.  As such, you usually won't ever see that light on.

You said that it seems to boot up fine -- I take it you got past the 61 error then?  When you turn it on, do the reels do their maiden spin, stopping right to left?

Does the machine seem to acknowledge that the door is closed when you close it?  The reels should typically re-spin and then stop (again, right to left) once you close and latch the door.  At that time, the "Insert Coin" light should illuminate on the reel glass, and it should be ready to accept a coin.

Do you have a sample coin in the comparitor ?

The comparitor light does not light unless the door is closed.

Go to the FAQ section and look up how to report your game chips.

There is a sample coin.
With the door closed I plug the machine in.  The reels spin stopping right to left the coins played says zero, I do not see an insert coin message.  The bottom light on the candle flashing quickly.  I open and close the door the and the reels don not spin, the coins played goes blank for a few seconds and then returns to zero.  Insert coin and it drops straight through, no errors otherwise.

Okay, that's good -- it sounds like the machine is seeing the door closing when you close it.

Is there a sample coin in the comparator?

There is a quarter in the comparator.  I have tried different quarters.  The light on the comparator does come on when the door is closed right after the reels spin.

Not wanting to make this a "trip around the world" thread, but it sounds to me like you may have coin optic issues. Are you familiar enough with your coin comparitor to pop it out and prop the rake open? If not, we can guide you, no biggie.

If I press the white button on the optics board it does record a credit and you can play.  So my two symptoms are comparator not working and optics not working.

I would guess to say that you may have a bad coin comparator or coin in optics.

Sounds like your coin-in optics are likely bad.  We can test those in the self test menu.  Can you tell us what SP chip is in your machine so we can get you the PSR for it and some instructions?  There's a sticky post here in the S+ section with a link to instructions on how to determine your SP chip.

I realize none, one or both the comparator and coin optics are bad, I was hoping there was a means to narrow it down before throwing parts at it.  If I hit the test button until the 4 appears in the coin played window (which is supposed to display chip values) the numbers are 3412 and 0932.
Summarizing what I know.
Light on Comparator does light when door is closed but coins fall into tray.  When you prop the rake open coins will drop in hopper but the coin optics will not record the credit.  If you hit the white button on the coin optics the credit will score and you can ply the game (door open) close door and lose the credit.
