Reel reader repair
« on: March 13, 2024, 10:21:42 AM »
My reel reader just died. I can move it from one position to another and the problem follows. I was able to find a cross reference for E-585-55 (NPN phototransistor) which is LTR-301.
What I need now, unless I'm told otherwise not to replace, is a cross reference for E-125-68 (5 volt light.) Does anyone know what the part number is?

Ok so now I am confused as to which type of reel reader you have (5 volt or 50 volt)

You said 5 volt light and that is the #680 Bulb, the photo shows the bulb and a photo transistor

Reel readers that operate on 50 volts use the 5 volt bulb and as a replacement for the photo transistor you can use the LTR-301

readers that use 5 volts require an IR Emitter and you can use the LTE-302 plus the same LTR-301 as the receiver.

Sorry for the confusion. That's my fault for not knowing the correct terminological.

I just made a new discovery regarding the reel readers. I found that reel position 2 and 3 have quit registering completely in test 5. I can move reel reader 1 and 2 around and they work, but only in position 1. Could I have a bad chip on the Reel Reader Control Board?

EDIT: Changed test from 3 to 5

The reel reader test is done using test 5, test 3 will check all of the input/outputs.

Assuming you meant test 5, it is unlikely that it would be the reel reader decoder since all chips are common to all reel readers.
That does not necessarily say the decoder is good, you would have to check all of the symbols on card #1 and confirm that they
are reading correctly.

I would examine the wire bundle and connectors to the reel reader cards, it is possible that you have a broken wire or something along that nature.
It is also not unusual to have more than one bad reel reader

I wanted to close this topic. I ended up removing all the grease that I added and maybe even some of the old that I tried to remove before, using brake cleaner. I played over 100 games so far and not one random 71, 72, or 73 error.
I have not added grease back to it yet. I thought that I would play a hundred or so games more games and wash it out one more time before I add any grease back to it just to try and get the old stuff out.

I still don't know why I have the odd readings with test 5.
