Game King troubleshooting
« on: September 29, 2014, 02:31:23 AM »
Hi. I am quite new to slot fun and to this forum.

I have an IGT Game King that was working OK until today. When I power it on on the mainboard there are both green and all five yellow lights turned on and red light is blinking. The machine doesn't do much more than that.

I have tried to disconnect/connect all the connectors to the mainboard but so far no luck. Is there any troubleshooting procedure that can guide me in the right direction what is wrong with the machine?

Post a picture of the mpu board where we can see the chips to identify what version mpu board, etc.  A blinking red light is could be a bad base chip.  Do you have key chip to try and see if you get a keychip menu?

I'm attaching the picture of the chips.

About the keychip - do you know which is the correct one for me?

Ideally a picture of the whole MPU would be better, but based on the chip layout I think you have an Enhanced Gameking 044 mpu with legacy adapter.  Are there 5 simm sockets right next to each other laid out horizontally on that daughter card?  In any case, you should use a Key 40.

Sorry, I thought that you need to read the numbers on the chips. This is a whole MPU picture.

So if I understand correctly the first step to troubleshooting would be to try a keychip procedure with keychip 40?

Yes, want to rule out any problems with MPU board.  If you get the key chip menu to come up, then it's likely something got zapped on your software.  Do you have any other 3902 software for your machine?

This is pretty much everything I have. What do you mean by 3902 software - what does that number stand for?

I will try to get a keychip 40 to try your suggestion. Will post results.

Sorry, 3902 (or 039) software is the general term assigned to the software type you have.  Basically it consists of simms and eproms and made to work with the type of setup you have.  For historical and informational purposes, the previous generation was called 3802 (or 038) and it goes on a 3802 board that only has eproms and no simms.  The last generation of these games use what is called an 044 mpu, which is what you have, but you are using a daughtercard that enables you to use 039 software on your 044 mpu board.  You can get 044 flash boards, which replaces the daughter card.  044 software generally has more software, better sounds, etc.

Try a key 40 first to see if you can at least get a boot screen, that way we can rule out the mpu board.  If you get nothing with the key chip, then we need to look into the mpu, daughtercard, power supply, etc.

Just FYI balos - The numbers 038 (or 3802), 039 (or 3902), and 044 are part of the manufacturer part # on the MPU. They were eventually used to refer to and identify different platforms, and software configurations.
