Bally 809 Transformer help needed
« on: December 30, 2018, 07:35:08 AM »
Hey Guys, I have a Bally 809 machine that I picked up. i'm 99% sure that the transformer is wired wrong.
Does someone some info on testing the transformer?

Here is what I have.. at the Red and White at the rear of the transformer I have 120v. at the Red and Black I have 50v at the rear of the coil.
between the Orange and Yellow i'm showing about 27V and if i'm not mistaken I should have 50v to operate the coils?

As a test I took jumpers from the red and black at the rear of the transformer and the coils worked fine BUT when I took jumpers from the Yellow and Orange (27v) the coils wouldn't close.  Could my transformer be bad?
The machine has Lights when powered on and I can make the hopper run.. but no coils seem to be working.. I bought the machine not working, so I have little info on it.. It is a Bally 809.

This diagram might help.
Slight possibility that the wires are connected in the 220 configuration.

David. After looking at your transformer pic to the first one posted of his, these wires connected to his transformer don’t look right..
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

I noticed that too.. apparently someone ran 120v to the top part of the unit to supply the small florescent lights with voltage. I disconnected it when I was testing.

So it should be wired like this? Where should I attach the black wires that are currently attached to #5?
That circuit goes to the hopper unit I believe.
Thanks for the help guys!

The white and red wires in question I believe is one side of the line voltage that operates the fluorescent lamps. The only other solid red is used on the bell and service light in most cases. But, Need to double check check the schematic to be sure.
Transform tap #9 should be vacant according to the diagram. First thing I would do is to remove the red and white wire from the transformer. Trace the red and white to see where they go. Thinking the white will go directly to the fuse holder, but the red you’ll have to double check. Check the voltage for correct output.

Transformers may come with jumpers connecting lugs to each other.
Sometimes there hard to see and are silver in color.
Jumper circled in blue.

Photo of 809-K schematic.
It appears that the wiring is in the correct position.
Best to retrace wire as to compare to the schematic.

Also noticed the coils are separated and a little dark as in overheated.
Could or could not be causing a problem. Need to consider all possibilities.
