1088 not paying out on some winners, but bell rings then shuts down

Been working on getting my 1088-76 working.  On some combinations (e.g., Bar, Orange, Orange) the bell rings but no payout and the counter does not advance.  80% of the other winners payout fine, but just some do not.  I checked for loose wires on the wheel but did not take anything apart.  Should I clean the contacts shown, or is there another issue given the bell rings?  I think it times out since the bottom goes dark and i have to reset by pushing the rod under the hopper.  The hopper is not spinning when the bell is ringing.  Note, on my machine the bell rings for all payouts, even 2.

bell ringing and payout use different wipers on the reel contact plates to keep the 50V and 6V circuits separated.


definitely clean the rivets on the contact plates as a first step, then clean the traces on the payout counter disc.  If that doesn't solve the issue, I use the paperwork to check the circuit thru the reels to the payout counter.


do the shotgun approach of cleaning everything first, and if that doesn't work yell if you need more info on tracing the circuit using the schem/reel wiper diagrams.

Works now, thanks.  I took apart the wheel and removed the three wiper blades.  Found more dirt on the right wheel.  Didn’t realize at first that I needed to adjust the position of wiper blade when I re-assembled, so when I turned on an tested the problem got worse.  Took apart again and notice the rivets did not align with the wiper blades.  Once I fix that on all three, I played for 20 min or so and all payouts were correct.  I didn't’ hit bar, bar, bar, but the combinations that did not work previously, now worked, so I am claiming victory.


Interesting find while working on the wheel, I notice some machining was done to the right side where the wheel rod sits and to the wheel rod itself (flattened on one side)  Must have been done to stabilize or position the wheel.  See pictures.

That flat spot and small metal plate with 2 screws is the correct design.

pull the handle to spin and immediately grab the fan on the left side of the reel mech ... that'll stop the wind-down and reel latching.  Position the reels to the symbols you want and let go of the fan.


you can also position left reel, let go of fan until it latches, grab fan again and repeat for the remaining reels.  Helps if the reels want to wander a bit and you can't hold all of them at once.
