What Bally EM model and help with issue
« on: May 09, 2021, 01:14:37 PM »
Hello and thanks in advance!

I've had this slot machine for over 15 years and it's worked perfectly with no issues up until now. My first task is to identify the model so I can better diagnose the issue I am experiencing.

The tag on the side of the machine reads 952-A and the schematics for the 952-A say it's a 5 coin multiplier. My machine only allows for 3 coins. Is this some kind of conversion? If so, how do I go about determining the model number or the model number it's impersonating?

The issue I am having is it no longer registers coins and plays. When the door is closed coins feed into the hopper, but it doesn't register the coin or allow me to pull the arm.

When the door is open coins are returned (pretty sure this is normal). I can bypass feeding coins and activate the arm and spin the reels by lifting up on a metal piece on the arm mechanism. Machine pays out when a winning combination occurs.

You can see in the photo that the "3rd coin" column is illuminated meaning three coins have been fed into the machine. Column illumination will cease after a game is played. Seems that the machine is stuck mid-game or something.

There is a white button behind the hopper that does nothing when I press or hold it in. I thought this was a reset button.

Recently, I had to drill the lock out because the key broke while trying to open the machine. In lieu of the lock, I have been sticking a screwdriver through the lock hole and lifting up the latch to open the door. Not sure if this is related, but the machine worked for awhile doing this.

the 1090 was a 3 coin multiplier with left-right pay.  The sharpie writing on the reels boosts the odds that at least that part of the machine came from a 1090.

the 952 was a 5 coin multiplier with progressive jackpots ... two sets of number reels that increment occasionally ... so the lamp panel in the top isn't from a  952 unless they filled in a big hole where the progressive reels went.

you can find paperwork for a few models of the 1090 on http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/

if you look at the numbers / codes stamped in the slotted metal reel index discs, you can see if they match that paperwork.  Most common would have been p-684-[305, 306, 307], maybe without the P or dashes.  If they used codes instead, it'd probably be something like X-3-coin-mult

p-684-[320, 321, 322] was second most common

p-684-[401, 402, 403] or [407, 408, 409] would mean the reels likely came from an MGM Grand casino machine.

the coin switch going down should cause the coin relay on the left side/back of the reel mech to trip.  When the coin switch goes back up, the handle release relay should trip.

if ya need help interpreting the schematic, yell.   Shotgun approach is check the switches on the handle release relay (blue/yellow to grey/blue wires), the first reel snap switch (grey/blue to blue/red wires), and coin relay (blue/red to white to coil).

could be plug connections between also.

Sounds like the coin mechanism needs cleaning. Just some canned air will work.
Coin mechanisms are sensitive, so much so with the door open the angle will kick the coin into the tray in some cases.
This can happen if the coin travels to fast.

There is a magnet in the coin mechanism. Make note of the related adjusting screw and turn it back 1/4, this might help.
If there's no difference then turn it back to the original position.

Check the coin in trip wire as in moving freely down and up to its normal position.

I took the shotgun approach and the rubber sleeves weren't covering the exposed wire ends that attached the handle release relay and that fixed it. Also, cleaned off the coin mech. Appreciate both of your replies.

On another note, my reel codes are 684-[305, 317, 307B]. I didn't see those codes for any of the 1090 series, but still poking around that index.

Thanks again!

if pushing on the sleeves changed the behavior, you'll probably need to resolder those wires eventually.

the 1090-14 (park tahoe casino) and 1090-17 (barbary coast casino) used those index discs.  My list ends at 1090-19, but there were more made after that.

the corresponding reel tapes were m-231-[12, 46, 14].

the payout counter and reel wiper wiring were the same as the base 1090.

below is the tape defs that include the 46 tape so you can compare to the defs for the 1090 ... which I forgot to upload to the the site.  There now.  I think the 46 has one less bar, 1 more bell.

So there’s no ID tag on the machine.

I’ve been under the impression 1090 machines are wide body with wide reels.

Check the wiper boards and machine components for hand written model numbers.

good catch  on the wide reels on the 1090, so the reel mech isn't from one of those.

the tag/cabinet is 952A.  The game is a conversion to a 1090-like game.

Right Wolftalk,

Machine has been updated, not your typical Bally glass on top.
Reels case is marked 1090 and also 831Z on the reels assembly that looks like 8317.
Anyway it’s a nice machine.
