Bally V20/20 Transparent Reels Monitors Flicker
« on: September 16, 2019, 04:31:35 PM »
Greetings,

I have an opportunity to pick up a Bally V20/20 Transparent Reels Game for a decent price. Comes with a nice Topper and even a Stand.

According to the seller, the Monitors sometimes flicker on and off, but the game doesn't shut down or try to reboot. The screens just go blank for a minute or so then come back on.

The company he purchased it from suggested replacing the
Power Supply.

Does that make sense?

I've never worked on a Bally like this, but think it's a cool machine and would love to add it to my collection, but I'm not completely sure of where to start troubleshooting this problem if I did decide to buy it.

I don't want to end up putting a ton of parts and money into it, so I'm hoping it's going to be an easy fix.

So, if the experts wouldn't mind commenting on what could cause this problem, I would be greatly apprecitive.

Bad caps in Power Supplies do cause strange things to happen, but so do flakey Monitors or Video Cards.

Thanks, ash100

If both monitors are doing the exact thing at the same time, I would agree on the power supply issue.  Flaky video cards will usually hang up the system requiring a reboot typically.  Bad monitors can flicker if they have a bad inverter, but if both of them are doing the exact same thing, then it would be too much of a coincidence that it'd be so.  If you don't want to take a chance, get a known good power supply and put it in the machine to see if it fixes it before you buy it.  I'm sure the seller would allow you to do so.  These machines use 2 power supplies a 24V and a 5/12V power supply.  Make sure the 5/12V power supply is the 360Watt version (has 45 Amps on the +5v rail).

Thanks rickhunter,

That was a super quick reply.

He claims they both flicker at the same time during startup. You can see that the machine is still booting, but the monitors flicker in and out.

Do the monitors use the 24v power supply?

I'll keep you posted. It's a nice looking machine. The game is Ruby Rush.

As stated if both monitors do the same It is the power supplies,  Most likely the 12v one, Could be both ?. Pot luck on that but if the machine boots etc. and comes on line I have to agree power supply issues which should not be to bad depending on what your paying for it?.  Hope this works out for you.

Also flickering could be described as many different things.  Did he send you a video you can share to see what this "flickering" looks like?
