Buzzing no video
« on: February 25, 2016, 07:25:27 AM »
I picked up a Bally Alpha that had been sitting for a while. Brought it home and changed out all 3 batteries and when I turned it on I had a buzzing noise from the cpu and no video. I swapped the board out with a working on and all was good. I decided to replace the batteries in this one before I set it up and now I have the same problem with this board. buzzing and no video. I tried booting it with no batteries and same problem. Any ideas??

I'm no Bally expert but on an IGT you'll get funky stuff happening if the MPU isn't reinserted real snug or the motherboard has an issue in the sockets that recieve it

This happened to both board so it was with two different power supplies. It's weird that it would boot with the old batteries but as soon as I replaced them this happened to both boards. I checked to see that all the pins are good and the board is seating correctly.
I have two mpu's coming tomorrow, but if they need batteries and the same thing happens I don't know where to go.

You can isolate the MPU vs cabinet issue.   With the mpu outside of the cabinet, plug a monitor and plug power.  If it doesn't come on, make sure the little white rocker switch is in the on position to see if you get anything on the screen.  If you get text on the screen, you have a short somewhere in the backplane.

if I turn the atx switch to the left and start the slot it starts and the reels spin. The monitor says vga in then no signal. The reels continue to spin.
With the board removed form the machine in get the same thing on the screen. If I put the atx switch to the right with the board out it goes back to buzzing and the reels don't spin.

I'm trying to see if you have a short.  Remove the MPU from the slot.  Put it on a table or somewhere.  Attach a computer monitor to it, and power up to see if you get something on the screen.

I guess what I can't understand why changing the batteries on two working boards would cause this to happen too both of them.

I take it that this is a 512 or lower box since you mentioned 3-batteries, Alpha 1 gig uses 2-one in box and backplane and alpha 2 uses 3-2-in box and one in backplane.  Put it all back in machine with fresh batteries.  Put the proper clear card in top slot with game card kicked back/removed.  If this does not work then put cards back in (game/os) and let it cycle/buzz then with ON toggle the black atx switch to off then on.  You may have bad cpu's or a bad backplane but I don't think so.  I ran into this and some others esp. on the 512 boxes from time to time.  The boot sequence is off this is why it is buzzing.

First of all thank you 777 sizzler I have it up and running! I tried it with the clear card and game card out and had the same problem. When I switched the atx switch it started booting normally. I was able to clear and set it up and is playing as it should. This is an Alpha 2 as it has two batteries on the cpu and one on the backplane.
I guess my next question is how to I fix it so I don't have to switch the atx every time I turn it on?
I guess replacing the batteries messed up the boot sequence.
Again thanks to everyone for you help fixing this!

Bob

Bob, The Alpha 1 256/512 boxes have 3 batteries also I did not state that in my post. Glad at least you have it going, Post a pic of your game.- :cool_thumb_up: . Also as to another question you had-You should not have to mess with the atx switch again, even after turnining off and back on.

:Scratch-Head: I turned the machine off last night and when I turned it on this morning I have the same problem. I had to switch the atx switch and then it booted correctly. The other thing is that the candle is flashing all the time. Any ideas on where to look now?

I received the two new cpu's and both machines booted correctly. My question now is would it be better to keep power to the cpu when changing the batteries? If I remove the cpu and power it on the bench and swap the batteries that should not mess up the boot sequence.

Thanks
Bob

I've always changed batteries with the mpu off the machine with no power.  I don't know why you had those other issues with the mpu's before, I have never seen that happen.

This is an old post, but I figured some will read this.....

You can solve the "buzzing" by installing a AVBPROD0R807-00ST U16 BIOS chip. Boot the Engine with a 317 CLEAR card and Clear. Then Boot the Engine with a 317-2 OS card (the game doesn't matter), and you'll now notice the Engine doesn't "buzz" anymore. And you no longer have to toggle the ATX switch to boot the game.

The OS Updates (from 336-05, 336-09, 336-11) never updated the sequence because it was being "held" non-volatile by the batteries. Since casinos leave their machines on 24/7, batteries drying during normal machine life span, and OS updates, wasn't an issue.

Hope this helps!
