Hissing sound?
« on: October 05, 2020, 10:57:15 AM »
When my AVP boots the speakers make strange beeping electrical noises. The whole time including booting and after there is a hissing coming from the speakers. It's loud enough to the point I can hear it from 5 feet away. I plugged in headphones and verified the hissing is coming from the brainbox jack and not caused by the amp. If I use the volume wheel from my headphones and lower the volume a good way it removed the hissing noise from being heard but obviously doesn't solve the problem.

Is this hissing noise normal? Any way to fix this?

I ordered a volume cable for if there is no other option. Also got a splitter and bluetooth adapter to be able to pipe music from the speakers. I hooked the speakers up to my phone and the sound was amazing quality!

So I got a topper (obviously one of the quadrants came broken so now I need a new topper :duh: ) but my speakers are hissing along with the light pattern extra loud now :( . There must be a grounding problem. Any ideas how to fix it?

In older car stereos you sometimes got a ticking sound out of the speakers as the electrical system picked up the spark plug noise from the rotor.
The fix for this was a 1k resistor from the negative speaker lead to ground. Not sure if this would work for the slot (no spark plugs - lol)

In the older S+ platforms there was a 10k board and a 16k board. The 16k board used to make a speaker hum. This made them less desirable for home use.
You could fix this by creating a tank circuit to clean up the signal. More work/$ than just getting a 10k board and not having the issue in the first place.

I am not sure if this problem is inherent to the AVP platform. I don't have one - but others might be able to chime in here.

Curious, what MPU type do you guys have?   A 3.0 or 3.0M (620, 625, 660)?

I know this sounds pretty basic, but here goes.  I have had several AVP's with that noise.  Every time, it has turned out to be the connector going in to the brain box.  A little wiggling at the connector makes the hiss come and go.
I was never a believer in using contact cleaner sprays of any type.  That was until I discovered a wonderful, but expensive contact spray called Caig DeOxit DP5.  A shot of that in the hole the connector goes in, and problem solved.  This stuff melts away oxidation.
The real test for me was light bulb sockets in old Pinball Machines. Nothing has ever worked in the past for bad bulb sockets other than replacing them.  I heard the rumor that DP5 can cure bad sockets.  Sounds to easy, LOL.  Tried it, and I am amazed!  Dozens of light sockets I treated 5 and 6 years ago are still working flawlessly.  Highly recommend this stuff!  It has been about 3-4 years after treating AVP speakers out jack connection. Still perfect today.  :-)

Do you just shoot the spray into the jack, or wet a qtip and insert it?  I've always been hesitant to just shoot the spary in there.

I have just given it little squirt right in the jacks hole.  Then plug in the plug, and move it back and forth a few times to help wipe away oxidation and clean up it's connection.

Holy cow this stuff must be made of the tears of snow leopard cubs at $25 a can. I will give it a shot and update if it works though.

Thats a 6 towed abino snow leopard.  Its more here in Canada due to the exchange rate and the $49th parallel.
We call it the $49 parallel as it seems whatever we ship costs at least $49 to cross the border.

The cleaner came in. Gave it a shot and it seemed to resolve the finnicky right speaker problem so audio is reliably stereo. The problem is now I have the crystal glitter base powered on also and when booting while the crystal glitter base is on rainbow mode there is a LOUD electronic noise until the machine switches the crystal glitter base to solid blue. The hissing/static noise can still be heard after the base turns to blue.

The noise caused by the glitter base cannot be heard with headphone from the jack. My new topper with working quadrants also came in and the speakers don't seem to be hissing along with the topper anymore.

I got the volume cable in the mail and installed it today. Doesn't really fix the underlying problem but it worked even better than my headphone cable to remove the hissing noise. I had to pump the volume up to get it loud enough though.

When in rainbow mode a 3.5mm ground loop noise isolator removes the crystal glitter base noise from the speaker but the base itself still makes a noise. With the crystal topper set to stay blue the whole thing is finally quiet like my PC though.

I have no idea what is causing all these grounding problems. I tested my outlet and around the cabinet with my multimeter and everything seemed grounded fine.

The bluetooth receiver came in and worked but it turned out to be designed for a car and it wants me to press the power button every time to get it to pair :duh:
I got a new one and a powered 3.5mm mixer coming from aliexpress and I will update when it arrives.

Formulation: 5% DeoxIT® (active ingredient), 75% odorless mineral spirits (carrier solvent), 20% propel- lant.
Formulation contains petroleum naphtha (odorless mineral spirits) solvent, and is briefly flammable (until solvent evaporates within 2-3 minutes).

The 5% "active ingredient" is a secret.... :rotfl:

You've GOT to read this guys! lol...>>>

Stick some sandpaper in there and SCRAPE the junk off the contacts.
