It looks like it.  Since it was disconnected from a casino environment, it has all the comm tilts.  A clear will get rid of all those.  Before you do that, it would be interesting to look at the accounting information to see just how much money that machine has taken in and given out.  Also take a picture of your MPU board so we can identify what it is that you have. Make sure the markings on the chips/simms are clear so we can read them.

Wow, that's a really old title. I had never seen it before.  You have what is called an 038 board.  You could easily buy yourself a newer 039 board and have access to more modern games as well as Gameking 5.3 software.  It is just a board swap, but you can get the newer software which is a bit pricier, but the games are sooo much better.  You can use your current game on the new board as well.  Once you are in the 039 world, you can get games like Little Green Men, I Dream of Jeannie, Alien, Terminator, Lucky Larry Lobstermania (which is probably the update to what you have), Amazing Sea Monkeys, just to name a few.  The 038 stuff is really old and the graphics and sound on those left a lot to be desired.

I have never tested a Key40 on a 038 board, but this chip will clear your machine to where you can setup as stand-alone and be able to play it.  Since I don't have the type of board you have.  I don't know for sure if a key 22 will also clear the machine, which is what was typically used for your board type.  Someone else will chime in and verify if you can just use a key 40 or you will need a key 22.  Either way, a key chip is a must for the gamekings.

3902 games are readily available.  Once you have a 039 board, the games themselves are at most 5 simms and 4 to 5 eproms, and most typically 3 or 4 simms with 3 eproms.  They fit in a small box and shipping to Australia should not be a big deal from the US.

I had always heard of them referred to as 3802 boards and 3902 boards, not 038 and 039.  Am I mistaken on that?

Also, as you noted, he's from Australia -- I think the game that is installed there is not one that ever would have been installed in the USA.  I can't say I've ever seen a Game King-era game like that in the US, based on the graphics and whatnot.

I've heard them called both ways.  But 038 and 039 is what I call them since it is my understanding that there are 3900 3901 3092 and 3903 boards around, with the 3902 being the most numerous.  I know IGT used to call them 039.  Here's one of their marketing publications that they sent when they 039 to 044 migration was about to happen.

Jensen

We have plenty of 3902 MPU's  and software to get you set up right. It is a fairly easy to set up. Like Rick said you will have a larger range of games to choose from. Let us know if we can help you out in any way.

Thanks
Jeremy

Looking at your machine, I noticed that all the I/O wiring is going to a shelf on top of where your MPU board is.  I don't think I've ever seen a cabinet like yours.  On my cabinet the wiring goes to small I/O cards that plug into slots in my cabinet, 2 in the main cabinet and 1 on the door.  You appear to have these all clumped up in that I/O area on top of your MPU board.  Does anyone now if this is the case for really early 038 cabinets, or is this something international only?

13" GK and early 19" GK cabinets have a removable IO card tray that is similar, but not identical, to the one in Jenson's photo.  Here's a photo of a 13" GK MPU & IO card tray.   The MPU looks similar to a 038/3802 series board, but it has a nicad battery and the coin cell battery is absent, using battery backed ram chips instead.  I agree a 3902 board would be the way to go, hopefully it's compatible with the machine.

It appears that key is not compatible with your software.  Maybe someone another member from Australia will see this and be able to help?

Would it be worth it for him to try with US-based software, or perhaps a US 3902 board in that cabinet (if the pins are the same)?

Back when I had a couple of the older gamekings with the older type boards (before I ever even had touched an s2000) I used key 17 and 97 on gamekings. And on my old WOF you had to hook a switch to the little 2 pin molex connector on the board to change settings.

I would think the clear would work at least partially. Are you still getting the same error messages after replacing the base chip when you turn the game back on?
The only difference I have seen between US and international software is the denominations that the bill validator will accept US 1 to 100 international 1 to 10,000. So US software would work if your not using bills. It should be possible to upgrade the board if you want to.

You should have got one more message after the "Please wait ..." that stated to power down the machine and replace the base chip.  If that message never appeared, then the machine was not able to complete the clear.

Possible reasons for the key 22 not to finish ...
The EEPROM is the wrong size (a 256k when it should be 16k).  If you didn't replace it, then disregard.
The EEPROM or RAM chips are in the wrong direction (you would smell burned IC and the chip would be very hot).  If you didn't remove them, then that shouldn't be the problem or cause.

The RAM is on the board in slots U6 and U22.  The EEPROM is located on the motherboard backplane (that the MPU slides into).

Check to ensure the ram chips are in securely, in the right direction, and with no bent pins.  Same with the EEPROM.
