Using a dead 256mb or 128mb board for key chipping?
« on: December 29, 2014, 09:12:12 PM »
Just want to check out there on info using a "dead"/"bad" 256 or 128 board for the sole purpose of using it as a "key chip board" only. My buddy jimise informed me that using the previously mention boards to set up an 044 IGame when changing out games is the best way to go so as not to bend those tiny legs on the game chip or keychip when removing, installing and re-installing. I keep finding "good" boards, but can't find a bad one at a reasonable price. Any suggestions as to ANOTHER way to key my game without using this type of board or an easy/safe way to remove and reinstall the chips? I have a 256 board with game, but don't want to remove it to key chip another game onto the 044. Thanks for any help and thanks Jim for the info, just trying to get this game up and running, after all, its only been about a year?????

Chris

Put a low profile ZIF socket on the board and you will never have to worry about bending or breaking chip pins.  I put this zif socket on top of the existing socket on all my flash boards.  They work really well.

Removed the tooled socket on my S2000 and found that the holes in the board were too small for the ZIF I bought... I bought a new ZIF and some standard sockets as well as 4 replacement boards in case the original board was damaged during the removal.  We had to go over 850 degrees and switch to a 100W gun to get the two pins that were hi-temp soldered.

:Scratch-Head: Why in the world did they choose to use a tooled socket on the only chip you would be swapping on a regular basis?  :duh:

I just put the zif socket on top of the existing one.  That I why I bought a low profile socket.

The ZIF that I bought originally would not fit into the tooled socket on the board no matter what we did... might have just been a cheap ZIF, I bought a better one (no pun intended) from Tayda Electronics and it should be here in just a few minutes in the morning mail.  I bought some standard ones too in case I needed to use them as an intermediary.
