So you could have any of several different SP chips in a machine (as long as they were all the same game type) and you wouldn't notice any outward difference in how the game plays? The SP chip primarily affects the preference settings & options?

Yes, that's correct. The SS chip is responsible for the payouts. The Sp is the SG of the the S2000 world.

...and to take that a step further, the SP chip is the "operating system" of the S+ machine.  You could think of different SP chips like different versions of Microsoft Windows -- Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows 7, etc.

Each version of the SP chip will run the SS (software chip), provided that it's a compatible game type, just the setup options may be slightly different between different SP chips since additional features may have been added in later SP chip versions.
