Bluebird 1 screen flicker
« on: October 31, 2015, 06:48:22 AM »
I have a WMS BB1 that has slight screen flicker.  I have tried changing the monitor, monitor cable and the power supply but it still persists.

I have a backplane coming to try next.

If that does not take care of it I will find a different CPU.

Has anyone run in to this before?

Any thoughts?

Yes!!!

My BB1-1.5 cabinet has the same very slight flicker which started up when I changed the monitor out due to excessive "tar" behind the touch screen.  It seems to stop after the machine has been on for about half an hour.

I am assuming it is a problem with the monitor itself...................still better than the "tar" from the original.

Aging of the monitor basically.

Bryan, is it a Kristel 19" LCD?  I think I know what you're talking about.  It's a slight flicker...very slight.  When some games are sitting idle I notice it, but when I spin the reels, I don't notice it.

Yes, correct, and when you open the door it goes away!

I'll have to try that.  Yeah, this flicker is almost like a refresh rate issue that you'd see on a PC if the video settings are incorrect.  I played around with it, but didn't see any difference.  I'd be curios if the same thing happened between an NXT1 and NXT2 board with the same game.

I have been living with it for a while myself.  And as it happens it IS on my BB1.5 dual screen so the DVI input IS being used.

My thoughts are as I mentioned before, aging backlight tubes in the monitor itself. It does go away and become "flicker free" after about 30 min of warm up time.

At one point I suspected a weakening PSU or faulty power connection, so I unplugged the molex that brings power and touch signals, cleaned it with spray contact cleaner, and plugged it back in.

I would swear that helped for a bit, but it may just have been the usual "warm up" time????

Does anyone have a good source for new monitors?

There was a supposedly "new in box" one on the auction site, but I don't see it now.

You can try some of the NLG vendors perhaps, but "new" ones are going to be scarce.........

Perhaps try this????

I have a new 19" ceronix conversion kit with bezel and mounting hardware.  Wide view model CPA3092.  I bought it to convert a reel machine but ended up going direct to BB2 so not gonna be using it.  Less than half of what I paid for it at $250 plus shipping if interested.

MONITOR HAS BEEN SOLD.  THANKS.

You would be amazed at what recapping the A/D board in those old monitors can accomplish...

Sounds like a good winter project, other than the caps do you change anything else?

No, generally the caps dry out/bulge and cause all kinds of issues.  It's honestly a 10 minute job.  I'd tell you what kind of caps they are but I don't have any more bb1 monitors to check.  90% of the time that'll fix any issue with the monitor.  The other 10% you'll have to look at the invertor board.  the less than 1% would be the a/d board firmware going bad.

Just to add to the thread, the same game with the slight flicker in an NXT1 MPU, does not flicker at all when I throw it on an NXT2. in the same machine.

Thanks,
Jason

And for what it's worth, I also changed the cable from VGA to DVI.

Thanks,
Jason
