WMS 101 - Education Needed Please
« on: November 09, 2015, 08:48:30 AM »
Hello all,

I may have made a mistake and bitten off more than I can chew, but I've committed to buy a bundle of three, somewhat broken slots from Craigslist.  IGT - Tabasco which doesn't power up at all, IGT - The Great Turkey Shoot which powers on, sounds as though it is playing, but doesn't display anything, and a WMS - All That Glitters which he says powers, displays and needs to be reset (I don't know what that would mean, clearing the memory maybe or a new battery...).

I feel like I at least know where to begin on the IGTs. I may still be hitting up everyone for help, but I have pretty good comfort there.

My concern is with the Williams, which I know very little about. I'll post specifics once I get the machines in house, but I have some very basic questions that I'm hoping will help me get a jump on the machine.

Is it safe to assume All That Glitters will be a BB1?

Will the jackpot reset key I use for my IGTs work?

If I can assume it is a BB1, what kind of ram clear chip should I get?

Would this be a good candidate for a BB2 conversion? If so, are there instructions available and what would I expect to spend to do so?  My ultimate goal would be to have it play the Alice games, but know that I might be the one dreaming there.

Are there any other WMS 101 new user tips I should be aware of?

The pics below are from Craigslist, it will be at least a week before I have them in my possession, so additional pics are not option at the moment.

Not a bad find. First off, the reset key is the same for all the machines you have. The Tabasco is most likely a bad power supply or the power supply is not completely seated. Try re-seating it, if it still does not power up, swap it with the one from the Turkey game. The Turkey shoot most likely has either a bad monitor or a bad connection to the monitor. Check connections, if it still does not work, try swapping with the one from Tabasco. The WMS is a BB1, you will need a compact flash clear card to clear & reset it. Post a wtb in the classified section &  I am sure you will find one very quickly. You are able to convert your bb1 into a bb2, but it will not be cheap. You will need to replace the cpu with a bb2 version (min $600) you will also need to add a top monitor, The Alice game that I have would not display correctly on the lower square touchscreen,I had to install the widescreen version. The $$$ adds up quick. You may start off with trying some different BB1 titles, or convert it to a BB1 dual screen setup, & run reel em in, Monopoly or one of a whole host of available Games.

To add to the above post:

The clear card you should get is the one CLR1810 as that one works with either bb1 or bb2.
Since you have the 16" top, you can install a 22" monitor on the top.  There are various threads of people doing the conversion.  The cheapest route is to get an NEC monitor.  It conveniently fits in the area left when you remove the glass, no mods needed to topbox.  It has a narrow viewing angle, so it is by no means the optimal solution as most of the time you are looking at this monitor from below at a wide angle, so the colors are off, but it is the easiest one as far as the conversion:
http://www.amazon.com/NEC-Display-widescreen-EA223WM-BK-22-Inch/dp/B007QWHU08

The middle monitor can be mounted on the door and my require some dremel tool cutting to get the monitor to fit properly.  I bought a ceronix monitor which comes with the black plastic frame around it, but it wouldn't fit right on the door without using the dremel tool.  So I mounted it on the outside while i waited for either an OEM monitor to come available for a reasonable price, or I got my BB2.  I picked up an OEM monitor, removed the "ears" and was able to mount it to the door without making any modifications, it is not "casino" worthy as the door mounting leaves some empty areas that don't look "factory" but for home use it is good enough and I didn't have to make changes to the original bb1 cabinet.  If you want it to look "original" you will have to do some extensive cuts to the door (removing the little tabs) and shaving some of the left side of the hinge and "inventing" some sort of plastic bezel.  There are a couple of threads here of people who have done the conversion.

As far as the Alice games are concerned, there are 2 variants.  One is the Reel version, and the other is the video version.  Doing the video version is a lot easier, but you can definitely do both.  If you want the alice topbox animator, it will fit in the topbox you have and you simply plug the power cable from the animator to the only molex plug that will fit in your topbox distribution panel.  Then you run a VGA cable from the top to the CPUNXT2 brainbox for the little alice monitor.   The reel version involves getting the 5 reels, a transmissive reel monitor, a reel controller and associated harnesses.  The hard part is finding the Alice strips and software, I have been looking for them, but have not found them at all.

The WMS platform and Bally Alpha platform share a very similar Setup procedure.  There are a few videos that show you how to setup an alpha progressive machine. You do the exact same thing with your wms machine, except you skip the part that deals with the progressive settings.

Other than that, I think you will find the wms experience superior to the IGT games.  It has always been my favorite platform to work on.

Thank you!  This exactly the kind of info I was hoping for!  I was nervous to get into machines with known issues, but having this site available is the only reason I felt confident enough to go for it.  I'm always amazed at how willing everyone is to help out.

The machines are several hundred miles away and I was going to pick them up on our return trip at Thanksgiving.  That said, I'm getting excited about playing with them so it may end up being a mad dash trip this weekend!

I've ordered my clear flash card and once I feel comfortable with what I have, I'll probably start the quest for BB2 conversion.  If the IGames don't take much to get up and running they may help fund it.

Rick are there any specs that single out the monitor you specified other than the huge one of not requiring any mods to the top box?  If I buy one, I'll happily go with the NEC, but I ask as I have few old pc monitors around that I might try out before investing in something new.

theoretically any monitor that is 1680x1050 native resolution ought to work.  I have a dell monitor that works, but it was too thick and bulky and woudln't fit in the top box.  The nec's bezel and and thickness just fits.

Rick, I will say, if you went through all of that to fit a ceronix monitor to your BB1, then you may have gotten the wrong monitor.  I've converted quite a few BB1s from the original Kristel to a ceronix replacement.  The ceronix monitors came with a new thinner bezel, and the correct mounting bracket was already on the monitor.  Just unbolt and rebolt, no need for a dremel.

Upgrading to a bb2, you'll also want an OLED button panel.  I don't know what they are going for, but I'd imagine the original panels (not the liquid resistant ones) should be fairly available.

I replaced the original kristel 19" bb1 monitor with the ceronix 22" wide monitor that is meant for bb2's.  So the bracket is for a bb2 system, not for a bb1 system.  I had to remove the brackets and invent something to hold the monitor to the door.   Then you have to dremel the tabs off the door otherwise, the monitor will not sit flush against the door frame.

Jonm287, what is the 19" replacement that you used to replace the Kristel 19"?

Thanks,

These are it.

My cabinets all have had the 19" Kristel.  I have seen some lcd's that say they are 18", was there a difference in the cabinet or the thickness of the plastic bezel?  Can you really tell them apart side by side?

Rick, you can use a bezel for a BB2 on a BB1 door.  It trims out perfectly.  Instead of cutting the tabs off you just trim them a bit to install the bezel.  The only other thing I needed to do was add a strip of black plastic at the top of the bezel to close the gap between it and the speaker grill.  See photo below.

Hmm, never thought of that.  I must be missing something on the mounting of my monitor because the bb1 door has a slight curvature to it and the monitor does not seem to fit flush.  I will post a picture of my conversion tonight to get some ideas on how to make it look flush.  I suspect the bezel will have a lot to do with that.  Now I just need to find one!

Door is curved and bezel follows the curvature but the bezel is flat in the back.  Also, if you cut the tabs completely off, that may be a problem since the tabs hold the bezel in place.  I think I have a part number for the bezel if that helps on your search.

Ya, I noticed that too.  I was  debating if it was worth trying to get an order together while it is available.  If there is enough interest and someone wants  to  go through the hassle of breaking an order up once they get them, I'll happily pitch in the  price of one plus shipping to help reach the minimum.
