I Game Black Screen
« on: March 28, 2016, 12:58:52 PM »
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is posted in the correct forum until I have an idea of the culprit.
I Game was working fine one night, and next morning black screen when trying to turn it on.
I can hear the static sound of the monitor when powers put to it and the machine sounds like it's booting up but never does. There is a blinking red light on the 3902 tray and the bill validator never cycles. I don't smell anything burned or see anything unusual.
The red light can't be good. Is it most likely not the monitor (which is old and I'd expect that to go out) because of the red light on the tray?
Thanks in advance, Jim

Check the voltage on the batteries, both the green varta battery and the coin cell battery.

Not sure what a "green varta" battery is but I'll look around.
Thanks, Jim

Would there be a fuse for the power lead to the monitor that could have blown? I had a Gameking with a 3802 board with a low battery and it had a popup to warn me. I didn't think the Varta battery mattered on 3800 or 3900 series boards. Just asking, still learning...

Hmmm.  I don't think it's a problem with the monitor since the BV won't cycle now.  Reseat the MPU with the power off?  Check connections on the backplane?

Guys, would an I/O card play into this?

The only 3900 series board I've seen with a Varta battery is a 3903.  Most are 3902's and only have the lithium coin cell main battery.  If it's dead or low the machine will boot and tell you that the main battery is low after it boots.

The red blinking light on the MPU inidicates an error condition and it isn't booting.  I'd try reseating the software chips/simms, make sure all the socketed CPU components are firmly seated in their sockets, and check the power supply output voltages.

Sorry, you guys are correct, it is the enhanced board that behaves that way.  Then 390x series does not do that.  The blinking red light is definitely a not booting issue.  Like Tilt posted check to make sure the eproms/simms are making good contact and reseat the mpu.  Also look at the mpu for any obvious signs of damage.

Thanks guys,
I swapped out trays with a different program and it booted up fine and the monitor worked fine. I haven't determined yet if it's the program chips or the board yet but at least I know it's not the monitor.
