GameKing hangs up when trying to clear EEPROM using key 28
« on: November 25, 2018, 02:49:20 PM »
Hello, I’ve now reviewed numerous threads on clearing and keying and I’m not seeing a path forward on my GameKing.  I apologize in advance if all this is covered on a thread I’ve missed, but I have done plenty of looking and none of the solutions I’ve spotted are available to me or have not worked in my scenario.  I suspect the root of my problem is some poor choices I may have made along the way and am not sure how to find my way back.

Background:

Machine was purchased over a year ago working with a 044 flash board loaded with GK 6.5 software.

The cash out button had been disconnected and had over 400,000 credits on the machine

A month ago the battery died and I wanted to see if I could load up a different game by simply pulling the EEPROM from the motherboard and swapping the game board trey from another machine.  That failed as there were some hardware discrepancies so I ended up putting things back to original, and putting in a new battery

Perhaps erroneously, I assumed I had to clear the ram and set up the game from scratch, but I could not get the game to the point where I could zero out the credits.  I hoped that clearing RAM, EEPROM and key chipping with key 28 would work even though the credits had not went to zero.

When trying to get through the key 28 process, I can always clear Ram, I cleared the EEPROM the first attempt (it has failed on all subsequent attempts) and have not been able to successfully apply the keychip.  At some point in the process I always get hung up on a page that says “Please wait while the operation completes...” and it never goes away.  I have let it sit for over an hour.

I’ve tried adding a blank EEPROM to the motherboard hoping that would act the same as a clear, it did not

I have a legacy adapter board and did try to use that with key 28 for the clearing process with no success, I have also now installed a low profile ZIF adapter to the flash board so that I can more easily swap the key and boot chips, but still get hung up when trying to clear the EEPROM.

Any suggestions on what to try?
Corey

It's fried. I will give you $50 for it. Ha!
Had similar issue. Mine wouldn't complete clear process. It was a bad flash board. Those are very sensitive to static electricity. Sometimes getting it re-flashed will correct the problem.
Now for the legacy adapter. Key 28 is not correct. Try using a Key 40.

Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Make sure that eeprom is not in backwards.  I had that happen, and after turning it the right direction, everything cleared fine.  Yes, make sure the 28 is being used for the 044 game and the 40 for the 3902 game on the GK Deluxe board.

Thanks,
Jason

Also when you replaced the EEPROM make sure you installed the right size.  044 boards use 24C256.  The 3902's used 24C16's.

So this is starting to sound a lot worse than simply me not knowing what I’m doing...

I will check EEPROM, I could absolutely have the wrong one in.

As a test, I put a key 22 in the legacy adapter board and it doesn’t bring up a menu, just a red screen.  I think I have a second 22 key so if I can find it I will test with that as well in case I’ve hit a bad chip.  I don’t have a key 40, so that may be a problem there as well.  The key 28 in the adapter board does bring up the menu options it just hangs in the same places as when I put the key 28 directly in the flash board.  All of this is happening on the same game tray, so I’m not sure if that matters, but I suppose it could if some of the information from the flash board get’s loaded onto the main board and game specific information is looking for the proper key for the last game installed.

I have a GK 6.3 and Carnival of Mystery flash boards that I can mess with as well but I am a bit concerned that if I wiped one board that continuing down this path cause could cause a second one to go bad. Asside frome grounding myself as I work with these are there any tips or things I should check before I test with a new flash board?

You need a key 40 with the legacy adapter, the key 22 will not work.

It looks like this may be the problem, i didn’t realize the EEPROM’s were different and I think when I did my test swap I grabbed one of the EEPROM’s from a stash I used on a 3902 game I had.  Regardless, both EEPROM’s I currently have access to are 24C16’s.  I’m going to order some 24C256 EEPROM’s and see if that does’t work some magic.

Thank you all!  I will update once I get the right EEPROM in there.

Quick update to close out the thread.  Once I replaced the 24C16 EPROM with the 24C256 EEPROM on the motherboard, the clear process worked great and I was able to set up the game without issue.

Thank you to everyone who responded!

Thanks for the update.  Glad it was just the EEPROM and not the flash board!   :applause:
