Do you use a UPS for your GameKing?
« on: March 04, 2019, 08:47:35 AM »
Hey Yall!

So happy to have found this site!  I bought a GameKing and the seller recommended I get a UPS for it.  I got one but it keeps going into overload mode, so I guess the power the machine uses is higher than what the UPS can provide (900VA/480W).

Does anyone know how much power a typical GameKing draws?  Also any recommendations on what UPS to buy?  I found this flyer (http://www.minutemanups.com/gaming/pdf/MM_casino_flyer.pdf) that recommends a MinuteMan Entrust but I still have no idea how much power I should budget for.

Thanks in advance!

Unless you plan to play your machine after a power outage for a few minutes, a quality surge strip is all you need.  A ups will only supply power for a few minutes after a power outage.  A game king should use no more that around 200w, usually it's around 120w.

Surge strip is all you need. I use these from Amazon 3940 joule. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J2EN4S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If it goes into overload mode, and there's nothing else connected to the UPS, it may be a defective UPS then.  I have measured the current draw on my 17" gameking with LCD/printer/validator/RGB Topper.  Average draw over an hour was about 150 watts with game play, somewhat less during idle.  So a 480watt power supply should more than cover the current draw.  You can buy an inexpensive meter (p3 Kill-a-Watt) for around $20.  It will tell you exactly how much current a device draws.

I live in a thunder and brown out prone area. I am using an ONEAC  CL1102 power conditioner for my I game. I do not believe this model is still in production, but I've seen them on eBay for $50-150. It is quite well made and makes for an extremely clean wave on an Oscope.

If that's an older game king with a CRT the initial current draw could be pretty high so if your getting overload on start up you might need a larger UPS. I can only run two fully loaded Reel Touch machines with a 1200VA UPS.
Also for you guys just running a surge protector in a brown out situation the surge protector will do nothing to the current coming in but the low AC voltage coming in really kills electronics almost as bad as a high surge so a UPS is a much better idea.

Thanks yall!

Yeah I understood the UPSes are there to protect against things like brownouts, not cause we really need to play slots during a power outage.

I had three different UPSes hooked up to a GameKing and a Bally's slot machine, and they all died having gone into overload mode so it is very weird.

My electrician checked the machines earlier this week, he said they were all working according to spec and within the power/Amp requirements of the UPSes.  He suspects the UPSs (APC is the brand) are suspect.

Anyway thanks for your help!
