black screen vs confetti screen
« on: February 11, 2022, 05:47:24 PM »
I'm used to getting the confetti screen when I put in an untested board — that usually means I need to re-seat some chips — but has anyone gotten a black screen when putting in a board?

What would be typical causes for this? The monitor is on, but there's no image.

I'm pretty new at this but I've been doing lots of swapping of EPROMS / SIMMS on about 10 different 3902 boards and I have only come across the confetti screen.  Never a black one.

If you have more than one board perhaps try swapping parts from one to the other to rule out the board?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have two boards (they're 3802), so I'll
try swapping stuff.

One of the other possible issues is that I had to put in that center socket that the backplane plugs into. I'm wondering if the pins aren't aligned correctly.

I only have 3902 but ironically enough I now have two boards that boot up with the key chip fine to the initial key menu then after hitting the jackpot key 3 times and swapping in the base chip the screen will go black and do real quick flashes of a thin bar of color vs the colored screens until it gets to the EPROM error screens as it's supposed to.

One of those two boards has issues and will display "WRITE STROBE ENABLED" and "CHECK AND REPLACE PROCESSOR BOARD".

I didn't even bother to look.  I'll load a game on it and try again.

Is there a document that shows what all those LEDs mean.?
