Super Spin Sizzling 7's Static noise ?
« on: October 16, 2014, 07:42:28 AM »
Have IGT S2000 Super Spin Sizzling 7's made 3/03. Machine was working fine for a few months and then while in play, makes a loud hissing/static sound that overrides the normal theme. I changed media board and also replaced the Simm board (Speech). That helped for about a week, now it is doing it again. The "sound" is louder than the theme sound and seems to be coming out of the right top speaker mainly. Any ideas?  :Scratch-Head:
Thanks in advance!

Maybe it is the speaker itself? Have you removed the top glass and temporarily disconnected the speaker? Since you have replaced the MML and the SIMM, I would now suspect the speakers or the amp may be the culprit. Both cheap fixes, so that's good!

All speakers are good...I do get the "noise" out of the other speakers as well, just not as loud as the right and it IS loud...
Where is the amp?

The amp is in the top box behind the top glass. It is a 5"x5" green circuit board mounted on a silver tray (screwed to back wall of machine, usually on right side). You may try reseating all of the plugs on it, but other than that, I don't know there's much troubleshooting you can do really. If you have another machine you can swap to see if it fixes issue?

The amp is a possibility here and worth trying a quick swap with a known good one.  I would add that this machine type (S2000) is famous with this type of distorted noise on the speakers.  This is especially true of a 4-reel machine.  I think many agree that the back-lit reel controller as well as other netplex communication devices like a printer cause distortion on the audio-out found on the MPU.  Many will say the best board to be using would be a 504revB, however my experience is that in the case of the 4-reel S2000, the sound distortion is still there even with the better quality board.  It may be helpful to know what board type you have so you might pull it out and take a picture or write down the number you see on the white P/N sticker located under your MM2 sound board.  A change in MPU may be the answer here and if not you might look at adding resistors to the speaker lines which you can find that solution under another post.

OK,
Looked at amp in machine, unplugged all connectors, etc. Amp appears to be OK. I do not have one to swap out. After cleaning, noise was still there. It is mainly in the right speaker and in the woofer in the coin tray area also... I guess I will have to look at MPU when I have time to find out what is in there...I also noticed that when I hit the nudge feature the 3rd wheel does NOT make the "click" sound when going in the up position, but does make it going in the down position... :Scratch-Head:

Wasn't there something about a fluorescent ballast causing noise like this? Are all your lights working?

If this issue just started, then it points to something failing. The static/noise that is associated with the MPU would have been there all along.

Unfortunately, you can't tell visually if this part is going bad (unless there were some obvious burn marks, of course), so I would hesitate to call it good until you can swap it out with a known good one.

Ok, here is some more news on the loud static noise when playing: I sometimes get the Haywire theme mixed in with the LOUD static also ???? So when normally playing, with reels spinning and normal theme coming out of speakers, machine will produce very loud static or oscillating noise ALONG with theme sound as if one hit the Haywire feature...??? I do not think it is the amp...   Amp will only reproduce what it is told to and not add different themes or melodies...I believe it to be from a chip/chips on the main board...I could be wrong, been there many times.... :duh:  Where to go from here without changing entire main board/chips,etc...??

Remove MM II sound board from the machine and see if the static goes away. You may have a bad sound board or bad simm, or this may not make any difference but it's sure a easy place to start.

If you decide to change the eprom software, the base chip will be the only one you will have to change.

Better solution to get rid of sound issue is just replace MPU/motherboard with a 1270 S2000 Enhanced MPU, legacy adapter board and motherboard.
You need the legacy adapter for the chips and SIIMM
The motherboard is also different.

The only down fall of the 1270 is the base chip location on the legacy board.

If you are hearing a slight motor sound from speakers every time the reels spin totally normal.
If MPU is not a 504B you will have major noise issues 504B will make most of it disappear.
1270 will eliminate it.
Also it will sound worse in home than a noisy casino.

The reason this is happening on the 501, 502, 504a boards is due to board and harness layout.
Compare that to a Desktop PC board layout.
If you look at most of the newer PC motherboards the sound chip is a short distance of the audio ports and front audio header.

The Print Circuit board layout designer at IGT or Vendor didn't think about audio isolation on the 50x boards.
The Harness layout engineer also dropped the ball.

I think this problem is hard to explain to some people...The machine will play fine most of the time...No low level hum from bulbs, no hissing,etc...Very playable 99.9% of the time...Then on occassion when the reels are spinning normally and the usual theme is playing thru the amp and speakers, there will be a VERY LOUD  Noise...This noise is similar to "pink" noise and oscillation sounds...I use to build tube power amps so I am very familar with this sound...The level of the sound in output I would guess is about 4 times louder than the usual theme volume and one would jump out of their seat when it happens...It sometimes has the Haywire theme mixed in with it, most of the time not...I switched media boards and installed a new Simm board also, same thing but happens less often...I would say it is not the amp, nor media board nor Simm...It has be be a malfunction on the MPU somewhere...Also to add salt to the wound, in the Mystery Nudge mode: if the 3rd wheel is nudged, it does NOT make the "click" sound when it is moved to center line 50% of the time...I guess I will have to live with it as is...
