Game King Newbie Looking for Identification / Resources
« on: March 30, 2024, 12:38:17 PM »
Hey all! I just purchased my first machine and super stoked to have this in my home. I know nothing about it, and the person who sold it to me didn't seem to know a whole lot either. It works, and that's awesome, but I'd love to know more about it. There is SO MUCH information out there and so many different machines that it's overwhelming, and I need help figuring out where to start. I think the first step is identifying exactly what the equipment I have is, so I'm attaching as many pictures as I can.

Honestly, I'm pretty happy with the way things are set up right now, but I wouldn't mind the ability to add/change the games available, if it's possible. The touch screen seems a little wonky and poorly mounted, so any info on sourcing a replacement for the screen and/or bezel would be helpful. What would be the cost/complexity of adding a TITO system? Also, a brief description of some of the important items inside the cabinet would be much appreciated. What are the white buttons on the left side of the MPU tray? What is the chrome toggle switch in the upper right hand corner of the cabinet? Are there any must-know things about the use and maintenance of this machine?

When I purchased it, the previous owner also gave me a chip marked "KEY00040" which he said "contained more games" but from what I've read so far, that might be a simplification.

Thanks so much for any help, super excited to be here!

 :NLG_WELCOME:

You have a 13" Game King with a 3902 MPU board running Game King 5.0 software.  It's an older cabinet probably from 1996 - 1999 timeframe.  The tray above the MPU is the I/O board tray.  It has two small I/O boards on it that interface with the game peripherals (buttons, lights, etc).  It looks like your hopper is missing unless you removed it from the machine?  Originally all these machines were coin-in/out, but that may have been removed at some point.  There should only be one button the left side of the MPU tray and it's the self test button.  The switch on the upper right side of the cabinet is the power switch.

You have a Ceronix 13 15" LCD monitor that someone did a hack job of mounting to the door.  It should be on a mounting frame and slide in on the monitor shelf that's empty on your machine.  You can probably get the frame from Ceronix to mount it properly.  You may need the door bezel as well.

Key 22 is the proper key for your machine.  Key 40 will work if you answer Yes to all the menu options.  Your machine's game software has the following games available:

Jacks or Better Poker
Jacks or Better Poker Sequential Royal Flush
Bonus Poker
Bonus Poker Sequential Royal Flush
Double Bonus Poker
Double Bonus Poker Sequential Royal Flush
Double Double Bonus Poker
Double Double Bonus Poker Sequential Royal Flush
Joker Poker
Deuces Wild Poker
2-10 Spot Keno
Power Keno
Cleopatra Keno
Multi-Card Keno
Caveman Keno
Cleopatra Slot
Leopard Spots Slot
Super 8 Race Slot

You can add TITO to it if you want.  The TI part is easy.  TO on the 13" GK is hard because it was designed before TITO was invented and there's no place for a ticket printer.  They made a box that mounted to the top of the machine to add a ticket printer, but they're difficult to find.

Congrats on your purchase

Thanks so much for the information! Couple of follow up questions?

You have a 13" Game King with a...

You have a Ceronix 13" LCD monitor that...

Did you mean to write 15"? That's the size that comes up when I google the part number on that monitor. Just want to make sure I'm not crazy.

You have a Ceronix 13" LCD monitor that someone did a hack job of mounting to the door.  It should be on a mounting frame and slide in on the monitor shelf that's empty on your machine.  You can probably get the frame from Ceronix to mount it properly.  You may need the door bezel as well.

I've seen several other door mounted LCDs on this forum-- are all door mounted LCDs hack jobs, or just mine? (And yeah, now that I'm looking at it, it is definitely a hack job.) The LCD is probably my biggest concern with this machine, as it's not seated in its bracket very well (you can push in on it and it'll move) and yeah the screws on the outer bezel are pretty tacky. I looked on Ceronix's website and found some items that might work, but I can only find 17" for IGT. If you have any further advice for re-doing this right (or at least re-doing it better) I'd be grateful.

There should only be one button the left side of the MPU tray and it's the self test button.

My bad, see attached picture. I thought these were buttons, but they appear to be rubber dust plugs of some kind.

Key 22 is the proper key for your machine.  Key 40 will work if you answer Yes to all the menu options.

I saw you wrote in another post that Key 40 needs to clear all the EEPROM and RAM data, and the machine is already set up 99% the way I like, so it sounds like it would be a silly risk to take, or at least a more involved project. I suppose I was only interested in the possibility of Blackjack or maybe multi-hand poker, but even if that were possible, it's not that important to me. I am, in general, a little unclear as to what exactly a key chip actually does and does not allow you to do. My understanding is currently that if you boot with it, then switch back to your base chip, certain options are "unlocked". That's about all I know. Sorry, total newbie. It sounds like the games available are a function of your base chip? Can I buy different base chips and put them in? Not that I think I even want to...

Also, I noticed a cable and a couple (probably?) ground wires that aren't connected. Should I pay any mind to these?

Again, thanks so much for all your help!

You're better quoting than me and I've been on this board a year or two, so I'm not going to attempt that many  :24:

Yes, sorry about that.  It's considered a 13" cabinet, but the ceronix LCD is a 15".  Their part number for it is CPA4013L.  It's closing in on $700 bucks now  :censored:  Toss in shipping and tax and you're over it easy...crazy times!  The monitor frame on mine is stamped CPM2374-L and the bezel is CPM2353.  I don't see the frame listed listed separately, so you may have to call ceronix and inquire about it's availability.  Here's a link to the entire monitor from Ceronix.

https://www.ceronix.com/product/cpa4013l/

Interesting enough it shows a 13" Game King with the ticket printer topbox installed that I was referring to in my first reply.

No, some LCDs are designed for door mount, but I've only seen them on 17" cabinets.  Yours appears to be homemade and functional, but not the best looking for sure.

Yes, those are dust plugs for the fiber optic connectors.

Keychips just simply allow you to access certain menu options that aren't normally available.  It's for security and jurisdictional reasons.  If you try to key your machine with the wrong key it will simply boot up normally, unless you clear the RAM and EEPROM too, then it will enter the keychip menu.  With the correct keychip you can enter the keychip menu just by selecting that function.  It can be a big deal depending on your game software.  Some GK software can take a considerable amount of time to go through and set it up the way you want it.  Having to wipe all that out when you just want to change a single thing is painful.  Just get the right key and you don't have to do that.

Those look like the wires that would go to the legend for the bill validator panel.  Since you don't have an illuminated panel you don't need to be concerned about it.  The loose ground wire probably goes on the door but isn't visible with the monitor mounted on it.  The ground strap between the door and cabinet is there, so I think it's an issue.  If you see the stud where it belongs on the door frame just hook it back up.

Ceronix seems to be the only game in town... regular old consumer grade touch panels are cheap now, anyone try using one of those instead? Wonder if the machine supports anything above 1024 x 768 resolution...

It's pretty slick looking. And expensive looking. Honestly I'd be fine with just setting the bare printer assembly on top of the thing, something like this:

https://www.casinotech.com/-JCM-Futurelogic-Ticket-Printer-GEN2-_2

Assuming it wasn't too much of a hassle to install/set up. Security is obviously not a concern, it's all play money but I'd like to give my friends the ability to "take" their winnings ya know?

Thanks again for all your help, hope you're having a great Easter!

The touchscreen is difficult to do because it uses IGT's proprietary Netplex communications protocol to interface with the machine vs a standard RS-232 type serial data.  Most are Microtouch or Digitek touchscreens with their own custom controllers to communicate with the machine.  I'm not sure what the display resolution is, but I don't think it's that high.

Yes, you could just set a printer on the top of the machine and use it that way if you want to.  You may have to make some custom cables to reach the netplex and power connections it requires though.
