Need help opening machine
« on: February 17, 2021, 04:27:06 PM »
My grandparents had a matching set of video poker machines and unfortunately they have both  passed away.  My parents and I cannot figure out how to open the machine, we have a key, but it does not seem to unlatch anything.  The local shop where my gramps used to take it in to be serviced has since gone out of business.

Info from the machine tag:
Model: 3670 - D
Descp: P.E. + Poker
Date: 1/91

My parents both think/seem to remember that my gramps used a screw driver in the front face of the machine to assist with unlatching something, but cant seem to figure it out.  Does the top of the machine (where the screen is) pop open/up, or does the front face of the machine pop down (or both)?

I believe this was a bar top machine?  Inlaid into the bar so you could play while waiting/having a drink.  In the photos it is sitting in an oak cabinet my dad custom made to house them - pics attached to this and the next post due to size limits.

TIA any help would be great!

EDIT: 2/20/2021 Got the machine open thanks to a couple members who helped below.  In post #18 there is a Google Drive link with current pics of the machine sitting in a custom made oak cabinet since this is a bar top style machine.  We are interested in selling it with the cabinet. There are actually 2 machines, same model and each has their own matching cabinet.

I came across this from searching around the forum: http://rwatts.cdyn.com/download/PEPLUS/ but not seeing any step by step on how to open the door.

Also came across a pic of another machine (attached).  This machine shows 2 locks on the front face (one to the left side and another more in the center of the machine).  My gramps only has the lock to the left side, there is just a hole in the center - assuming where he might have used the screwdriver??

There should be a keyhole on the front of the machine. Turn the key to the left until you feel it "pop". You may need to push down on the top of the machine to get it loose enough to push the latch. You should then be able to pull the top of the machine upward, using the coun tray as a convenient handle. Now that the top door is open, there is a small round knob inside the machine, in the front. Pulling that should release the front door so you can access the hopper etc. Hope this helps.

Paying more attention to your post, the keyhole I am referring to is the one on the right. You might be able to use a screwdriver but it seems unlikely. The other keyhole is the jackpot reset key. You might have to drill out that lock. In the meantime, you can unscrew a couple of screws on the front of that machine to get into the front door.

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately the Pic from the 3rd post is not our machine, just one I found online.

So the far left is not a lock but a reset. The actual lock is more centered, but our machine does not have a lock cylinder there, it's just a hole in the side of the machine where the lock cylinder would go. So narrowing that all down, how to unlatch the mechanism since there is no lock/key with a screwdriver?

you may be able to push the latch with your finger.

What side of the opening is the latch? Left/right/top/bottom? I don't remember feeling anything other than a plate towards the left of the hole. I tried to press it but nothing happened. Though like you mentioned before, maybe try pressing the top of the machine down at the same time.

I want to say it is on top, but I'm not sure. I'll check later today.

That would be fantastic, thank you!
If you dont mind, could you snap some pics of the mechanism as well?

It's difficult to get a picture of that area because the screen is in the way, but I'll do my best. We've got some family staying with us for a couple days, and they're staying in the same room that the machine is in, so I gotta find the right time to go in there haha. By the way, you're correct. That is a bartop machine, less common than the usual uprights.

On the PE+ Upright.
On the right side there are three locks
The top lock closest to the top glass/screen is the jackpot reset key / spring loaded / on-off / doesn't open anything..
- if your missing the key for this they can be found on ebay - or any of the vendors on the main page.
- This is the same key used across all of the IGT platforms. Its not unique.
The next lock down is the door lock - directly below this is a metal latch that you lift up (same as S+)
The bottom lock is the belly glass lock. This lock is spring loaded, it opens the belly door. You turn the key and pull the door.

What I have seen is that they may remove the middle door lock and just use the latch to open close the machine.

No problem and thanks!  Interesting that the bar top is less common, guess it makes sense since searching ive only come across 1 other photo thus far.

Okay. When you stick your finger into the hole the latch should be to the left. It was easier to get a pic than I expected. The little knob looking thing on the right in the images is the knob that releases the front door that I mentioned before. Good luck!

P.S. The pics are in separate posts due to file size limits

Jiisus beat me to it, but yes, my bartop machines are like yours with no lock in them. Just use your index finger and push to the left to get the latch to go. It may help to apply some gentle pressure down on the top of the door (like near the button panel) to get the latch to move, then you can lift the door open by putting your hand in the back of the payout tray and lifting up from there.

Your grandpa likely used a flathead screwdriver between the front edge of the cabinet and the door to help pry it up once the latch was being held open. You could try that if the door is stubborn and doesn't want to open easily, but the method I suggested in the first paragraph should work without the need for a screwdriver.

Thank you both for your help!

Went over to the house today.  My fingers were too fat to stick in and release the latch, but a flathead screwdriver did just the trick!

Wanna take a guess at home much $$$ there was in the hopper (that is a large freezer zip lock)?  There are still some coins in the tumbler/feeder up to the payout, guessing $3-5 worth of quarters?  Didnt know how to empty those so just left them.

Neither my parents, nor my brother or myself are interested in keeping the machine(s).  Any idea what they would be worth?  Better yet, anyone on the forum wanna buy them lol? One is local here in Sacramento (CA) and the second is up in Truckee, just outside Tahoe.

Since the file upload size limit, here is a Google Driver folder I just made to view pics of it.  The oak cabinet would come with each machine as my dad made one for each.
